MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel line gas tank fitting/filter

I have a clogged fuel line at the tank. Removed the line that was not getting gas and nothing came out, just a drop or two. I drained the tank. Can I remove the fitting/filter without having to reach inside tank? I assume there is a screen filter or something that is clogged and I want to remove it and clean it. Is this a process that is quick and easy, or a long involved "make a special tool" project?

The filters are in the bottom fittings, and can be reached once the fuel line is removed. They are very fine screen filters.

Good day Mr. Hull:

By now, I reckon, you have found the problem but I am posting this photograph for the devil of it. The item was available, (Spring/Summer 2012 Moss catalogue) complete or the filter screen only. should you deem it necessary to be replaced.

Cheers then; respectfully:

Remove the outlet fitting from the bottom of the tank. The filter screen is soldered to the outlet fitting. If the filter is clogged to the point that no fuel will pass through it, you will need to clean the interior of the tank to get rid of all the rust particles/gunk that is inside. Cheers - Dave

Finding out I did not have to put a wrench inside the gas tank (one old car had a fuel line fitting, that had a nut on the inside of tank - a real bear to get back on) I pulled out the fittings and screens. One of the screens was just plain SOLID sludge. The other would have been except the screen had come loose at the bottom allowing some gas to get through. I tried brake cleaner to clean the screens (did not work), now soaking them overnight in lacquer thinner to see what happens. If no joy, will order some new screens.

Before you give up on the screens..if the brake cleaner is a no go try household vinegar....either by itself or you can "juice" it up a bit by adding salt at a ratio of 1 cup per gallon for whatever size portion you need. Regards, Tom

I cleaned my screen filter in an ultrasonic cleaner with clock cleaning solution. Ammonia, warm water, and soap. It came out bright and shiny after about 45 minutes.

To clean rusty screens, use a product that removes rust stains, calcium build up in toilet bowls. Lowes and Home Depot have a product called Lime Away.

Soak in a solution 50/50 water mix. It will clean the holes to the screen brighten even the brass plug.

Vinegar will work (weak acid) as well but take more time.

For my work, I use a similar commercial grade product to help clean inline strainers and solenoid screens for restaurant kitchen equipment.
