MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel Pump Died

Electronic pump, not that old. Haven't used it in two months as the tank along with everything else was off the chassis. Wanted to start and run the engine and the pump refused to fire up. Sent an email to Dave Dubois to get his address so I can send it off to him. Took the pump off and removed the cover to look for burnt wires or whatever, but everything looked like brand new. Funny, I bought a new point type pump for the MGB back in 05 and it is still working like new, one of the reasons why I'm not to keen on the electronic ones. Have no idea what it cost to fix it, but if it's up there, I'll buy a new one instead and keep this one as a spare. PJ

Have you wired the pump correctly? Remember, the TD and TF are wired for POSITIVE ground.

B T Jones,Have you wired the pump correctly?

Yes the pump is wired correctly.
Dave Dubois, our pump re-builder is shut down for the summer. He sent me instructions for an adjustment to possibly get it going. If it won't fire up after the adjustment, a new one will be coming from B&G! PJ

Adjusted the electronics thanks to Daves instructions and the pump is now working as it should! Gee whiz am I getting an education! PJ

PJ, would the instructions Dave sent to you be worthy of publication here? Who knows, one of us might benefit from the info one of these days! I have one of Dave's pumps on my TD that works very well.
Jim Merz

Jim, I don't have a problem with that, but since they are Daves instructions and illustrations and since he's in the pump repair business, I will ask his feelings on posting them. Will get back on the answer later. PJ

Jim - Paul's pump is one of the all electronic pumps available from Burlen Fuel Systems through regular vendors and is a totally different animal than the solid state conversion that I do. My circuit uses an optical interrupter, whereas the all electronic pumps from BFS use a Hall effect triggering circuit. The all electronic pump that Paul has failed due to the triggering circuit being out of adjustment and is a fairly simple adjustment to bring it back in, and if the locking screw is tightened fully, the adjustment will remain in the correct position for the rest of eternity (or until the rest of the pump dies).

The adjustments on my optical trigger circuit is a bit more involved to get set right. Had Paul been using one of my pump, I would have taken it back for warranty repair, even during my off time in the summer months.

As for publishing the instructions for adjusting the all electronic pumps, I won't do that as those are instructions published by BFS so they are not mine to publish. Besides that, I add some instructions of my own to those from BFS so that those not familiar with magnetic circuits will not use tools that will introduce an error of their own to the adjustments made. Cheers - Dave
