MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel sender bakelite thumb nut thread?

Hello,

Fixing a leak in the fuel sender unit, I silly lost or misplaced the original bakelite thumb nut that attaches the wire to the connector on the fuel sender unit.

Is this part available straight from any MG parts vendor?

What is the thread of this bolt and nut in the original fuel sender?

Alternatively, I have found some sources for bakelite nuts, but I’d have to know the thread.

Thanks for the responses.

Jesus,

It's going to be BA British Association, I would measure the major diameter of the thread and the thread per inch with a gauge, and check the result with the charts for BA online.

Warmly,

Jesus, have you checked "from the frame up" website. Doug Pelton may have your part in stock. Item AF320 maybe it. Regards, Tom

Jesus - The thread is 2BA British). That said, a 10 - 32 (American) nut will work in its place. If all else fails, I have some used knobs that I could send to you, but the postage could well be more than the knob is really worth. Cheers - Dave

Thanks, Tom, for the direction. However, if so, part AF320 is listed at $39.00. At this price I think it is worth to search again meticulously in the garage and surroundings where I met the part for the last time...

Dave and David, thanks for the data. Now, I can use whatever thumb nut with this thread, but I would like to use an original part (I know that nobody inspecting the TD would ever notice).

David, I will make an additional effort to find the nut. If I failed, probably I would take your kind offering (there is a margin of $39.00 for postage and for a bottle of Spanish wine).

Just a suggestion, but check you local hardware store. I Know mine has a metal box of knobs and I do remember seeing some that were similar to the one on the fuel sending unit.

May have to retap the thread. unless there is a US or metric thread that is close.

By a stroke of luck (maybe motivated also by the cost and difficulty of getting a spare) I happened to find the lost original thumb nut.

But since I suspect that this incidence will be of very little universal concern, here is some contribution to the general knowledge. I have tried to find out the thread size of the said nut (which I believe is original), and these are the sizes of bolts that do NOT fit: 4BA, 2BA, 6-32 and 4-40. The 4-40 bolt is smaller but it can be threaded loosely. So the right thread must be something different.
