MG TD TF 1500 - Fuel sending unit panel gasket

The little gasket for the side panel of the TF fuel sending unit (not the big round gasket) was junk. What's the best material for making a replacement? Is there fuel inside that chamber? Does anyone sell that gasket?
thanks,

I would not muck around with any other solution than purchasing a gasket kit from Doug Pelton.

The replacement fuel sensors are very poor quality completely check out the unit for functionality before fitting and placing fuel in the tank.

Once again plenty in the archive on this subject.

Tyler, make sure to check it out with a volt meter before installing. Mine had a dead short right of the box but with a little bending of the metal tang inside and an added spacer plus a little JB weld to keep everything in place it now seems to be ok.

Besides verifying closed circuit while upright, be sure to tip the tank upside down and verify the switch goes open, too. The slightest gasket sealer can muck up the works.

As I recall, the holes in the tank are through holes, (as opposed to blind holes) so gasoline might leak past the threads without a dab of sealant on the screw threads (at least with TDs as I recollect).

It was originally cork. And yes, originally fuel was in that chamber hence the need for the gasket.

If you do use cork again make sure you soak it before installing it. It also helps to keep the tank at least as full as the sending unit so it does not dry out completely. So don't store the car with the tank empty.

If you used modern sealant on the fuel sending unit screws I think fuel will still leak into this chamber from the other openings.

I've been making gaskets out of used plastic milk cartons. The plastic used for these in the UK is softer than that used for Coca Cola and soft drink bottles and appears to seal very well.

Jan, how do these gaskets stand up to gasoline?
