MG TD TF 1500 - Fume Excluder - Steering TF

A few questions about installing the "FUME EXCLUDER, steering column (leather)" Moss #454-040 in my TF. The old one appears to be rubber. (?)

1) Should I treat the leather with a conditioner or water repellant such as Neet's Foot Oil, Mink Oil, or Valvoline VR-1? (Valvoline will probably cover it in a couple of hundred miles anyway.)

2) Confirm that the rough side goes against the toe panel held by a metal retainer plate. And that the neck is secured to the steering column with a wire hose clamp, which is still on the column.

3) Confirm that nothing covers the hole for the steering column on the engine side of the firewall.

4) What keeps the carpet from spreading open at the cut above the steering column?

Thanks for your help,

Well, I just started removing the old fume excluder and retainer. But doncha know, it ain't as easy as it looks.

I thought that I could remove the column clamp that secures the steering column to the dash, then slide the new leather excluder down the outer column. But no ... the clamp won't slide over the enlarged end of the column that holds the upper felt bushing.

I can easily slide the outer column with the clamp removed from the dash. So I thought that I could remove it and slide on the fume excluder from the other end before reinstalling the column. But no ... there is a cup attached to the outer column on the other side of the firewall that prevents it from going through the firewall. The cup has three small screws and may hold the lower felt bushing (?)

Am I getting into a bucket of worms?

Just spread the clamp open and bend it back when you are going to fasten it. I will assume the correct shape. Just make the bend uniform.

And pay attention to which way the screw head goes :-)

I am so tight with my money that I made a fume excluder from one of the steering rack bellows that I had removed when overhauling the steering gear. I think it is similar to the set up on a TC.

Looks like the steering column support bracket must be spread so wide for the points to clear the "mushroom" for the upper felt bushing that it may not return to its original shape (?)

Has anyone else spread the support enough to clear the bushing? Am I being a sissy? Any suggestions?

(Chris ... don't joke about my desire to point the bolt heads in the correct direction. I contracted my dreaded "picky disease" by reading your TF and TD sites !!)

Lonnie,
When it is all back together, and the carpet is on, how much of the excluder are you or anyone else going to be able to see?? Probably not much as you show in your bottom image,, Why not just cut up from the bottom so it can be easily put over the steering column?? Clamp it around the column, put the carpet back on and be done with it??

Hmmmmmm
I hate practical solutions !! That may be the route that I take.

Spread away. I have done it many times.

Be careful with the clamp above as chrome can crack when bending too tight or fast. But you can do it.
