MG TD TF 1500 - Gas cap center rivet

My gas cap spring appears to be rusted and I would really like to disassemble the cap (I already have the chrome/stainless cover off) and clean it all up, but I'm concerned if I remove that rivet I will not find a suitable replacement. I could use a bolt I suppose, but I was wondering what others have done. In the archives someone mentioned welding rod (? not sure what that entails). I'm not talking about the rivets that hold the hinge or clip in place, I'm referring to the large central rivet that holds the inner cover, spring and round central plate in place.

Geoffery, My cap is a little corroded inside also, but I'm just going to clean it as best I can and let it go at that. I personally would not even try to take mine apart as it works very well. I can see your point if the spring is broken, but I have no idea how you could replace the center rivet without damaging the stainless part of the cap. It looks like the stainless cover is crimped on by machine after the internals are put together. Be interesting to see how you correct this. PJ

Paul, I had no problem removing the stainless cover; working around it with a small screwdriver let me uncramp it enough to take it off. Putting it back on should not be difficult either, but I will have to be careful not to dent the stamped metal by holding it in a vise. I think if I can find a ring of pipe of the same approximate outer diameter, I can use that to hold it without damaging it and then press the cap back on and peen the edge back over. I'll let you know how it goes.

I removed the rivet and will substitute with a machine screw and I'll solder or weld the nut in place. Should work fine! And in the meantime, I can actually clean out the horrible mess in the cap...

I removed the rivet by drilling with a tap drill for a 10-32 screw.

The tapped the rersulting hole for a 10-32 screw.

Fortunately my cap is from TC and is cast brass with a centre screw rather than a rivet. Trouble is I will have to pay to get the cap replated. However the big issue is what sort of rivets can be used to attach the cap and release leaver to the tank? I have made split pins from stainless welding wire but would prefer something more original. I have a spare release leaver which has worn holes for the rivet. If anyone needs one let me know.
