MG TD TF 1500 - Gear box threaded hole

OK, someone out there must know. Today I worked on cleaning the outside of the gear box. On the right side upper rear corner just forward of the front of the remote shifter was a small amount JB weld or something like it that I took a sharp screw driver to and it came out and reveled a threaded hole. Now the interesting part. Tried several bolts to see what thread it was. Nothing fit, then on a lark I tried a lower unit drain plug from a Mercury outboard motor, It fit. Does anyone know what this hole is for and what is supposed to go in it, bolt or plug ? I checked the WSM, AS, and Moss catalog, all only show the left side. Thanks in advance.

Hi
Is this a TF or TD and could you include a picture.

Is it where the slotted screw is? If so, It's an access hole for the shift rod detents, I think.

My guess is that it is a plug for the hole that was drilled in the case for the two lock-out balls between the selector shafts.

OOPS - I didn't read your reply closely enough MAndrus. At least my guess was right.

It is a 55TF and yes it is where the slotted screw is in the picture. I think I have a picture in my mind of a PO removing it, then can't find it, but he knew where the JB weld was. Now I need to find one. Thanks for the help.

The screw is most likely an 8 X 1mm, but I don't have any idea how long it is. If my guess is correct, you can use any 8 X 1 bolt and just cut the head off to the correct length and cut a screwdriver slot in it. Cheers - Dave

Hi Fred
I'm at the shop tomorrow. I will check the spare cases I have for the screw you need.

Its larger than 8mm, maybe 10mm. The Mercury drain plug is the same thread. Just love those MG's. I already have some 39 Ford parts but outboard motor parts that's a stretch. Thanks, Gary

It was used for cross drilling according to my information. I took this photo and sent it to Barrie Jones at the time when I rebuilt my gearbox as I was unsure and that was the reply. It just needs to be plugged.
