MG TD TF 1500 - gearbox 1 shift a lot of noise

does anyone have any ideas abouth the noise and cracking with the first shift only
the other shifts are ok and working well

i didnt find metal in the oil
thanks

u udo - The T series MGs do not have any syncromesh in first gear. You either have to be completely stopped or learn how to double clutch when shifting into first. Cheers - Dave

As Dave says there is no synchromesh on first (or reverse). When stationary, always shift from neutral into second gear and then from second into first (or reverse).

thanks but the problem is with driving the car
it makes a lot of noise with making speed of drive away
not with the change of the gears i know that 1 is not synchr

If the noise is in first gear only then it can be the cluster and first gear. This will mean a complete tear down and inspection.
The layshaft for the cluster gear is also known for galling and the worn roller bearings add to the noise.

I'm afraid Sandy is right.
If you have a lot of noise in First and Reverse then it is most likely the needle rollers and lay shaft that is worn.
To get it out you need to tear down the whole thing.
You could remove the gear box and use a dummy shaft that is long enough to allow you to push out the lay shaft and not lose any of the needles that run on it. You could inspect the shaft for galling. That would at least point you in the right direction.
Probably if you have it out that far, you might as well go the whole hog and fit a new lay shaft and needles rollers anyway.

Dave Braun’s site will show how to do that if you have not been in there before. :)

This might also help you.

This box is the same as ours but for the selector assy. Link at botton of page to next part.

Loads of good info in there.

Keep in mind that first/reverse are straight cut gears that do make a little growling noise which is normal. Any popping or rhythmic clicking would be a broken tooth.

Possibly a time to consider a swop to a 5 speed gear box? I suspect it would be easy to find a good, cheap Ford Type 9 in Holland and the parts for my conversion cost less than £500
