MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox cover coarse, fibrous material.

Hi All,

Oririginally with TFs ( and I am pretty sure also applied to TDs), the metal panel which goes over the Gearbox was covered in a tar based material
which was possibly glued on and helped to deaden noise and may even have reduced heat transfer to some degree. Does anyone know of a similar modern day material/product available that would perform/look with a similar manner ?

Most of this material has been taken off the metal cover when restoration
has been done and not often replaced. It tended to disintegrate over time.

I believe it may have even been asbestos based as well which is a good thing to be rid of. Suggest using the modern stick on sound deadener/ heat deflectors sold at your local parts stores, speed shops or the usual aftermarket MG venders. Take your pick. MOSS offers several brands and I’m sure AS and others do as well.

I seem to remember that it was similar to builders felt or "tar paper"

Hi Rob,

This "EZ Cool" Insulation is good for heat and sound and is very easy to use with rubber cement. I put it everywhere I could, including over the transmission cover. I used a double layer over the firewall area.

For panel vibration I used these self stick CLD tiles (you can see a few of them), which are also very easy to use:

I put them in the middle of most panels, and then covered over with the foil/foam.

I'm very happy with the combination.

I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t asbestos, but a coarse orange brown, thick, non-woven type of material made from jute or some other natural fibre. Inexpensive (at the time) and a good insulator.

My recollection it was a tar impregnated likely asbestos fibrous stuff. But is has been years since I removed and threw mine away. George

Dave - I think you are thinking of the carpet underlay, including the gearbox dipstick cover. My neighbor Mr Barter has it right - it's like builder's tar paper.

Of course one can use whatever one wants, and there are many reasons why modern sound-deadeners and heat shields are excellent and advantageous products. But far from original. Chacq'un a son gout.

I seem to remember a piece of the original stuff somewhere in the shop; I'll take a picture if I can find it.

Look anything like this Dave?

Owner thought it might be original but I told him I had never seen it before.

What ya think Tom?

I think that material is pretty close, but without the squared patterning. I think it also had a black layer on one face - probably bitumen or tar based.

That looks familiar- but I think not from MG, I think it is carpet or rug padding. The padding on myTF tunnel seemed more like bitumen saturated felt than jute, and was glued to the tunnel.

This is it. Crumbly tar stuff.

Hi All,

Thankyou everyone for your input to the TD/TF gearbox cover overlay material.

Great shot Matt. of your TF1500s gearbox cover with the tar based looking material. That is how I remember it also. Now the hard part, to find something very similar !

This is what I used when replacing mine:

And I guess you could spray it semi gloss black to make it look authentic.

I used Dynamat (from Autobarn) which is similar to that shown by Chris. A sound and thermal deadening tar based product which sticks to the base metal.

On my YT, I have used it on the metal panels (ie gearbox cover, tunnel, toe board, firewall, inside doors and front quarter panels and rear wheel arches) which I can access.

cheers
