MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox gaskets and bearings

I'm making good progress on replacing the rear case on my TF gearbox with one that does not have a broken mount. No surprises so far.

A few newbee questions:

1) Is any type of gasket glue / sealant used on the paper gasket under the gearbox cover? Also on the paper gasket between the gearbox casing and the rear case?

2) I assume that the new bearing that I am putting in the rear of the rear case should be packed with grease. Correct?

3) If I should pack the new bearing, should I also push some grease into the mainshaft bearing that is exposed when the rear case is removed?

4) If I should pack the bearings, should I remove the clutch housing and push some grease into the bearing on the front motion shaft?

This is all new ground for me. Thanks for your help,

Lonnie -

I don't usually bother with any sealant on the paper gaskets; once they get oil-soaked they seem to seal nicely. If you do decide to use some on the rear cover gasket, use sparingly. I would not put any on the top gasket, since you will ruin it the first time you remove the shifter.

The interior of the trans is fully lubricated with trans oil; no need to grease any bearings.

Thanks Tom. No glue. No grease. That makes it too easy.

Do you have the gearbox out of the car to do this work?
Just curious.

Tom N -

Yes. The gearbox is out. The remote control and rear case are off. The clutch housing is still attached to the gearbox. I don't plan to disassemble the gearbox.

Was the old bearing shot? I have heard most of the new ones are junk. I agree with Tom about lubing with gear oil and not grease. I would use a very sparing and thin film of Permatex RTV (the blue stuff) on the rear case gasket, as well as the sealing face of the speedo pinion housing. There is a great write up somewhere about how to fit the rear elt seal. It is a real pain, and easy to get it mushed between the bearing and flange. If this happens, the flange will loosen as well as leak. Been so long I don't remember how I did that. George

Hi George -

I haven't looked/listened closely to the bearing in the rear case. I'll do so today when I knock it out of the "old" rear case to learn more about the felt seal before I install a new seal in the "new" intact rear case. I also have a new Moss bearing.

I searched the web for a description about installing the rear felt seal. The only one that I found was the same that Bud Krueger sent to me and recommended a few weeks ago. It was writen by Lawrie Alexander, so I trust its validity.

Is it the one that you mentioned?

Just to give an update and a confirmation on Lawrie Alexander's method of inserting the flange for the universal joint thought the felt seal in the rear case. Works like a charm.

'Course I did it twice because I thought that I had a problem the first time. Luckily, I had two new felt seals ... the first one could have probably been reused.

Regarding my original questions -

I smeared a little gear oil on the paper gaskets before closing up the gearbox; no glue or sealant.

I drizzled gear oil over most moving parts and the bearings.

And yes, George - I believe that the rear bearing was starting to show its age. So I replaced it with a hyper-quality Taiwanese bearing from Moss.

Thanks to everyone for your help,
