MG TD TF 1500 - gearbox lubricant

What are people using for gearbox lubricant these days? I just rebuilt mine and I need a recommendation. Thanks and have a good day!

Red Line MT 90 is the choice of almost all the owners on this forum John. I recommended the change to a mate with a TF & he was amazed at the difference it made. Cheers

MT 90 made no difference to me. I gotta be honest. Did not improve syncros at all. Archives has many, many discussions of this.

John -

At the suggestion of members of this BBS, I switched to Red Line MT-90 in the gearbox when I bought my TF a year and a half ago. And I'll use it again when I complete my gearbox rebuild this week. Don't know if it is snake oil or good stuff, it works for me.

I couldn't find a local store in Orlando that sells it, so I bought on-line.

I use the Redline stuff too, not because I expect miracles from it, but because it's a good-quality GL4-rated oil that's easy to obtain.

The problem with the claims that some oil made a huge difference is that you don't really know what it's being compared to. The guy might have had oil in his gearbox that was the wrong type or worn out. Just changing the oil will make a noticeable improvement if the oil is too old. People often don't realize how much gear oil can deteriorate over time; it really needs to be changed periodically.

I put Redline MT90 in both of my Morris Minors because it comes highly recommended on the forum but quite frankly I do not feel or hear any difference in the way the gearboxes operate. The TD will get it soon.

I purchased and used MT-90 on my TD. I have not run it yet.

However, since I had some extra, I have been using it on the gears of my South Bend lathe.
There was an immediate and very apparent reduction in the noise level.
