MG TD TF 1500 - Gearbox serial numbers

On my 1950 TD the gear box has stamped on the top of the body a serial number SD171. Would anyone be able to explain this to me please.

Yes John. I'll just have to find the correct thread in the archive. The info I posted came from Barrie Jones.

Peter I found the thread and now find my gearbox is from a Y type for the serial number starts with an "S". I now hope it will fit the TD. I have had problems with the bell housing for today I had to take out the gearbox to inspect the clutch and found that the bell housing is off a TC. I now need to find a correct bell housing which should be the one with the 3/4" shaft. My engine is from a TF which has an 8" clutch so hopefully I can marry them all together when I get the bell housing.

John that's one helluva hybrid mate. I do know the one guy here in Oz who could tell you whether it's all going to work or not. If you like I could ask him the question. I know he follows this forum. He's forgotten more about T Types than you & I'll ever know! AND he used to own my TD. Cheers

Peter,

I had it all together, that is gear box attached to the engine etc. however when I started the engine, depressed the clutch, I couldn't get it into gear. On taking it all out, and on inspection, I found the bell housing was either from a TC or an early TD for it had a 5/8" shaft. This wouldn't allow the carbon thrust bearing sufficiant movement to engage the clutch as it was hitting on the end of the spline of the gearbox motion shaft. It appears that the clutch lever on reaching it's highest point with the carbon thrust attached doesn't raise high enough for the carbon bearing to traverse over the motion shaft to enable the engagement of the clutch.

It appears that irrespective of the serial number of the gearbox, whether being for a Y Type, TD or a TF, I looks as though they are interchangable. Maybe others may be able to help me here.

Hopefully all will be solved this morning.

I will let you know how I get on, for if I fail then I will call on your kind offer.

Peter,
I have just read on the BBS Y forum where a gearbox from a Y type will fit a TD or a TF; the only difference being the bell housing. I hope so.
