MG TD TF 1500 - gearbox to bell housing

I am in the process of replacing my TD clutch owing to oil contamination,(or so I thought) it seems the pressure plate is so old it has lost the spring pressure, when replacing the 1st motion shaft oil seal I found there wasn't a gasket between the gearbox and bell housing. My question is, should there be a gasket in this area as this could be where the oil has leaked into the bell housing and found its way onto the clutch, only a small amount but enough to be too mutch,
your comments would be appreciated.

I'm no expert but the new 5 speed I ordered from UK lists that gasket in i'ts parts list.

Thomas,

I don't see a gasket listed in Section H ("Service Gaskets" H6) of the TF Service Parts List AKD804. The Moss gearbox gasket set doesn't include a gasket for use between the gearbox and bellhousing.

Definitely no gasket.

The oil in the clutch housing is from your rear main more than likely.

Hi Thomas,
You DO need to seal the joint but not with a gasket. I use silicon sealant. If you don't seal the joint oil can get from the front bearing and the front of the layshaft to the outside world under the car. To get to the clutch, gear oil would have to get through the threads, along the bolts and out through the split washers .... which is unlikely but I always seal this track with thread sealant on the bolts or silicon under the heads.

Yes, oil in clutch is more likely to be from rear main unless the front gearbox seal was worn.

Thanks to all inputs, I will use a sealant on the joint and threads. I found the cork sump seal had moved when last reassermbling leaving a small gap that allowed oil past. thia allowed the old anti rust situation under the whole car. All gaskets and seals now replaced, will have to see if successful when engine reinstalled.
