MG TD TF 1500 - gearbox to odometer defect

speedocable to odometer may work but the speedocable to gearbox is defect as per seller?
Is the repair difficult and what parts do I need to order - can not find the name nor the parts number in the explodedview drawings
Pls send me some imgages where the speedocable on a MG TD is and links to a parts number/explodedview drawing
kind regards

Bernd,
Do you have the stock MGTD Gearbox [Transmission] installed and are you looking for the Standard speedo cable?

Moss has the STD cable for TD
331-150 $78.99 CABLE, speedometer (orig. type)
It connects to the Right hand side/bottom of the gearbox.

If I have understood you corectly.

Look at parts 119 and 120 on the diagram.

This is the listing in the Moss Catalog. Item No 20

I assume the drive from the gearbox is good?

The cable on a RHD TD goes behind the brake peddle box and then up to the dash. Not sure on a LHD TD?

You can also check with Abingdon Spares http://abingdonspares.com/ They have many good, used parts.

thank you so much - the car but it is still in Germany, the owner just told me that the odometer is defect and the reason as per him is the gearbox [Transmission].... as soon as I have the car here I will check it out... maybe its just the speedo cable - if not thank you for the references where to look for the parts...
Bernd Reisbeck

would anyone be so kind to send me a real picture of the engine area where the speedo cable is entering the gear box - I have a RHD
the explosion drawing is good but real image is better - also is it very difficult to get the odometer out of its socket? sorry for these simple questions but I am a newbee and still waiting for my instruction manuals but have already read and seen a lot of "how to.." videos online e.g. from John Twist from university motors, which I find quite useful...
feel free to send me any other useful links if helpful for this topic
thx

Berad,

The Gearbox above is the standard gearbox for a TD.
When you look under your TD it is on the end of the bell housing where the clutch is. On the back of the engine. The Speedo drive in on the right hand side and you can see it arrowed in the picture. The big end of the speedo cable attached here. Slide the cable behind the peddle box and then up the front of the fire wall and through a hole to get it to the dashboard.

My guess is that the odometer alone is bad, not the entire speedometer. The odometer gets gritty and stops working long before the speedometer does. You can disassemble it and clean everything (I believe there was a post about this some months back), but it may need professional help, especially if parts are needed.

Red arrow shows connection to gearbox, there is a "bubble" in tunnel cover at that point.

It should not bend this sharply, not my car.

Peter,

That would work - It should be behind the peddle box.

by the way I look up the item 119 and 120 however it states on the moss web site its unavailable? and now?

Bernd Reisbeck

I would call them. They usually have speedo cables.

Moss lists four cables, LHD and RHD original factory type for concours cars or less expensive ones for LHD and RHD.

John Quilter (TD8986)

speedo cables for RHD yes but not:
119 PINION, speedometer gear
120 HOUSING, speedometer pinion
Bernd Reisbeck

Bernd, the pinion and housing are the same for a RHD and a LHD car. I mentioned Abingdon Spares above because a new pinon gear doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Abingdon Spares has a lot of good used parts. They may have a used pinon gear.

Bernd on early models before gear box # TW/396 The speedo gear in the gearbox was not keyed to the output shaft. Check to see if the nut on the gearbox output flange is tight, if it isn't the gear might be spinning on the shaft, if it spins the output pinion doesn't turn, witch doesn't turn the cable.

Butch is right with the early gearboxes.
You can add the keyway if that is the problem.

Bernd,
Is this what you are looking for?

Declan Burns

Hi Declan and all the others in this subject thread,
I have to wait and see why it is not working - the car is still not here - I was only told by the previous owner that the odometer is not working and the reason is the gear box... so thank you so far when I have access to the car I will know what to look and check for and will let you know, thank you so much for all your input,
