MG TD TF 1500 - Generator Reduction Gearbox

I have reinstalled my tach drive reduction gearbox on the generator. After installation, the gear housing can be rotated. I've tightened the knurled mounting nut as much as possible, but the gear housing can still be rotated by hand. How do I correct this problem?
Thx.

Corey, you might want to check the archives, but I believe the answer is by the installation of an o-ring inside of the nut. Bud

A Fiber washer will work also. Gerard

Corey: Do you have the little clamp behind the knurled brass collar?

Chris Couper

Thx gents, I will install a washer (there was none when I removed it).

Chris, yes, I do have the clamp. I tried to tighten it, but the screw seems to be bottomed out. What is the clamps function?

The clamp's function is to hold the adapter on the reduction gear box. If the adapter still rotates on the adapter with the screw tightened all the way down, You may need to cut a thin strip of 0.005" brass shim and wrap it around the neck of the adapter. The problem with allowing the adapter to swing loose, is that it can hit the primary connection to the distributor (if the distributor is rotated such that the primary connection is facing to the left front), where the adapted can hit it and short it out. Cheers - Dave

Thx Dave. I'll add the shim.

Search archives in detail also, there are issues with some generators having too short threads, and a bunch of other random things that can cause the box to flop around.

If you're not a stickler for originality this can also be solved by a tie wrap between the cable and the radiator support tube. Black ones are barely noticeable unless you are going for concours.

Upon careful inspection I determined that the clamp machine screw was broken. I drilled out the broken screw piece, tapped the clamp hole for a #4-40 machine screw and installed a new screw. The gearbox is now secured. Thanks to all for your assistance.
