MG TD TF 1500 - Generator refurbish

G/day all, apart from other things I am attempting to refurbish the Generator on my TF 1500, it has a C30 2DA41 on it.
I have not attempted this before so may need some guidance for instance what sort of tape is used to wrap the fields and what is the red coloured paint they use on the inside is it special.

thanks
G Mills

The tape is actually a cloth of type. Find a business in your area that rebuilds electric motors, they should have the needed supplies. I think, but not sure, the coating inside is Glyptol 1201 Red. PJ

If the field coil tape is intact, I would leave it alone.

Have you been able to remove the field coils? You normally need a heavy duty drill press with a screwdriver bit fitted into the chuck to unscrew the countersunk screws. You also need to retighten the screws VERY tight or it will touch the armature.

I would NOT tinker too deeply with the generator, or dismantle it beyond taking off the ends and removing the armature. Check the windings with a continuity meter, clean the brush holders, replace the brushes and springs as needed (the springs frequently break), check the armature segments for continuity, turn it down and replace everything. Make sure everything that should be insulated is, and leave it at that.

I might add to replace the bushing and bearing if either are worn. Remember to soak the bushing in oil for 24 hours before installation. I use Mobil 1

Thank you all for your advice much appreciated, all insulation was brittle and falling off, inside and behind fields thick with black greasy stuff, brushes just about worn out.
Having probs getting the bearing end off armature, is it necessary to remove the 4 little screws in the cover plate first, don't want to break the housing.
G Mills

Yes, it is necessary to remove the screws, and it has been replaced before. It had rivets from the factory. The bearing easily presses out.

Excellent point, Dave - I forgot to mention the bushing and bearing. Thanks. As Jim Neel mentioned in another post, I mean well, but am getting on in years.

Thank you, bearing off, bushing looks very good minimal wear.
Now need to find a set of brushes, does anyone have a part number, or do I really need one, maybe they are nothing special other than the size.

Got this far with your help thanks again, great support here.
Pity both my son and my grandson are not here they could help but alas they work away.
I am going to re do the fields with the correct tape, talked to a auto sparky and his only advice was not to bind the tape too tight, didn't say why.

On one generator I rebuilt, I replaced the tape with brush on electrical tape. It worked.

Tom, don't be too hard on yourself. I still look to you for advise. I'm still learning.

You might want to have a look at this webpage. The armature is no longer available.
