MG TD TF 1500 - Girling Hex Cap removal

What is best way to remove cap on Girling rear shock absorber on a TD without removing absorber from chassis

There is not much room and due to fender interference

Yet these covers are on very tight

Don't know but my feeling is, if it's leaking it needs to be removed and rebuilt. If not leaking, why take the cap off?
John Quilter (TD8986)

I made a wrench like this to get the caps off from under the front wings. Made it much easier.

I like that wrench - can you give me dimensions of the hex head

I figured it is about 1 7/8 across but not sure. does this also clear the fenders? Of do you still remove the damper?

I can supply such a wrench. Laser cut 8mm thick.

I second what John says. If it is low on fluid it is a leaker and should be rebuilt.

No I do not have to remove the damper. I used the birch plywood so it would not damage the cap. Declan's wrench would be ideal as well. The hex is also chamfered slightly so it sits down on the cap. The pressed tin cap is not well formed and the fine threads are a bit of a pain. Once off, I put a little bit of anti-sieze on the threads before re-install. I made the hex to fi the cap hex, I don't remember the dimension. I will get out into the garage tomorrow after I dig out.

Here is a drawing and it shows the chamfer that CR has mentioned. My wrenches are straight cut. To have added the chamfer would have doubled the cost. Easily done with a file and some elbow grease.

While we are on the subject, the seal on the cap is a bad design. I replace the thin seal which deforms with a large 3mm rubber seal.
