MG TD TF 1500 - Go Pro

I know some folks use Go Pro or some other video camera, I am looking for one to use with my car but am very confused about cameras. Go Pro say some folks have issues with distance focus and that would be a problem it seems to me, any information or feed back on a good camera would be appreciated.

This was done with a go pro camera, and a supercharged TD.

Tom -

An iPhone or iPad can make high quality videos - no extra purchase required. All you need to do is rig up a holder for it. Probably most smart phones can do the same. Plenty of simple do-it-yourself plans for a holder on the web.

GoPro will made a wider angle view than an iPhone or iPad.

I made this intro to my blog using an iPad, then edited with Windows Movie Maker (free from Microsoft). The original quality is High Definition. YouTube reduced the quality.

My wife gave me a GoPro for Christmas. I haven't made any videos with it yet.

Go Pros are pretty great...but are very wide angle (hence no need to worry about focus)...
Be careful of the memory card you buy for it (do a search as I forget the 'wrong' one)... I had to buy a 2nd one as the first made the camera shut itself off after a couple few seconds... First couple days was a bit frustrating.
The iPhone app that is free to download is very neat...allows you to see a digital viewfinder (there isn't one on the camera) and turn on and off
The battery life is about an hour, but recharge right before using rather then a day or two before...had mine fully charged and used it two days later and only got about 7 or 8 minutes of recording.

I have a Go Pro I use for track events (another car)and have an interesting tech tidbit. I originally attempted to use rechargeable batteries and had VERY short recording time. Throwaways recorded much longer. I'm an electrical engineer, but not battery expert. That said, here's my guess on the problem. The Go Pro requires a voltage very close to the max charge. The Ni-cad battery's charge declines linearly, quickly going below the required voltage for the Go Pro {although still fairly well "charged"). Normal batteries maintain a fairly constant voltage through their useful life, then the voltage falls off a cliff. Use regular throwaways.

David,

I've tried to watch your video of the funkhanna a number of times now on a number of different platforms and it is showing an error. I'm quite curious about it. Anyone else having the issue?

Go Pro recording of my son and I playing with his camera and the MG about a year ago....not edited, and the noise is from the internal mike....I was impressed with the quality.

Tom,
No need to spend a fortune on this.
Most new cameras have image stabilising built in and perform quite well. I use a Lumix DMC-TZ8 which must be 5 years old now but performs quite well but the only issue I have with it is with sound. The mic is forward facing and is also subject to wind noise and does not pick up the exhaust note of my TD when accelerating.

In use I mounted the camera on a tripod clamped to the floor just behind the drivers seat with the camera height adjusted to give the best forward view.

Hope this helps,

David

Thanks all for the information. At least I have some ideas now. Cant wait for driving season...

The youtube video Dave mentioned above is working now. I don't know why it was broken for so long, so what I did was go into the editing settings and bump a setting and then the video gets rebuilt. If you can run it on HD settings it's much better.

Youtube doesn't do the video much justice. The raw data file is so huge I cannot play it back on my laptop without it buffering.

Tom, I can't wait until you figure this out. You were the first person I knew with a GPS.

You can run into focus issues on any of these small cameras, including smart phones and tablets. The wider the lens, the less problems you typically have but sometimes it still happens.

The latest Go Pros are pretty good. Not nearly the quality of a "real" video camera but good for what they are. The handy thing is that you can watch what it's shooting on your smart phone while it's recording, and even control camera functions. So you never have to reach for the camera to start or stop recording.

It's tempting to go with the widest possible lens but the distortion just makes everything look bad. And audio quality won't be great either, especially in a convertible. If you can use an external microphone, that's better.

Here's some footage taken from a top of the line GoPro yesterday. Be sure to set for Hi Def playback.
