MG TD TF 1500 - Grease Nipples

Hello All,

Happy new year!

Do any of you know if there is a resource that explains all the grease nipples our MG TD's have. I want to replaced them and need to work out which angles and numbers to order.

Thanks in advance.

I can think of only two things that go wrong with grease nipples: they become clogged with old grease and no longer flow, or the tiny spring breaks so the ball-seal no longer seals. If your nipples pass those two tests, I would not replace them. On the last really nice car on which I worked I simply cleaned them well, painted them silver, and re-inserted them.

I know of no list of the different nipples, orientation, etc.

A mix of UNF and BSF sized grease nipples are used in various configurations (45deg, 90 deg, etc). Most sellers have them, but they rarely tell you exactly what size they are. The exception is NTG. Look at their website and search for grease nipple. - see mgbits.com

I can tell you Mioss has never sent me the correct nipples when I’ve ordered them. The one I’ve never come up with is for the peddle box shaft. But I agree in that these should be identified as to angle, size and thread pitch. They should also be added to Chris Couper’s Oriiginal MGTD website in the details section.

N. Ros,
What is wrong with the ones on your car now?? from what I remember they are all straight,,
Abingdon Spares over here in deep River can possibly supply them,,

I think there are angled ones, for instance, on the front suspension. But all in all, I agree - why replace them?

Thanks all.

I have fallen for the old trap...

I decided to put a new thermostat housing on the car...then I stuck my head around and thought hmm I might also replace those engine bushes, then out of the corner of my eye I sped the A arm bushes - yes...they should be replaced too...and now the whole damn front of the car is dismantled, together with rear suspension being done...brakes replaced etc etc - that led me to start to question the nipples - one of the last things that has not been replaced or ordered in the last 3 months of self inflicted mechanical hell :(

You are all right of course - ain't broke...don't fix it - sadly I needed that advice three months ago.

Cheers to all who have suffered a similar fate.

Grease Nipples
15 or 20 years ago, I was working for Moss Motors in their Tech department when a call came to me from a gentleman who was seeking BSF Grease nipples. When I inquired what kind of car he was working on, he said he wasn’t, it was a piece of heavy equipment made in England that has operated outside It’s entire working life. After several decades of virtual constant use and regular maintenance it was being overhauled and he needed 300+ BSF grease nipples in various sizes and angles. I replied that we did have some stock and different sizes etc., we would not be able to fill his enormous order. It was at this point he pleaded with me for my help as he was on a tight schedule and did not know where else to purchase them but remembered where he got BSF parts for his father’s MG TC. I told him I would investigate what I could do and call him back later. After digging around and talking to upper management I was given the OK to give him our suppliers contact information in the UK as!
we could not will his order with out decimating our limited stock. I called him back to share with him our information, when some one answered the phone “Disney Maintenance Division” I asked for the gentleman I had previously spoken to and passed on the information. I then inquired “what is Disney…” he then explained that he was from Disneyland’s maintenance department and they were overhauling the Flying Dumbo ride. It seems that when they first built Disneyland, Walt contracted with a company in England to build many of his first rides, Flying Dumbo and the Spinning Teacups were among the first rides installed there, and all were built in England.

Thank you Terry, that is a fantastic story.

Ross - I trust you got the black poly bushings for the A-arms, and not rubber? The poly provide MUCH better handling, and last much linger.
