MG TD TF 1500 - Group 27F battery with a flat top?

Anybody know of a reasonably priced (<$150) Group 27F battery with a totally flat top for my negative ground TF? Similar to the top of this battery ...

I don't want to drop $300+ for a reproduction battery. Instead I would like to buy a flat top battery and glue on six vintage battery caps. And add a Lucas logo on the front.

I know that it won't be concours quality, but it's fine for local shows.

On a relate subject -- anybody know where I can get six vintage battery caps? The ones on ebay are not a uniform type. Perhaps I could cast six caps from one original using a resin casting kit from a hobby store(??)

If I can't find a flat top battery, then I will remove the two 3-gang caps and temporarily sit six caps over the holes for shows.

Thanks,

Lonnie

Lonnie - I think that what you are doing is a bit excessive, but that is up to you. The flat topped batteries are relatively common today, try the local auto parts houses (NAPA, Auto Zone, Discount Tires, etc.). One of them should have a battery with a flat top. As for vintage battery caps, look in the yellow pages for battery recyclers, there should be one in your town or a town nearby. They should have all the caps you want. Good luck - Dave

I'm sure the illustrious Dave S will post the work he did for his batteries,,,

Yep - Dave S's TarTopper looks great. I had saved two previous posts with photos and sources. I decided to go with a full size battery and try to make it look sort of original.

Dave: I bought two Lucas decals from you a few months ago. One for my battery that I knew was near death, and another for the new battery. Are your helmet cables from Rhode Island Wiring? They look like 0 or 00 gauge.

I couldn't find a flat-top / no-cap Group 27F battery, so I bought an AutoCraft Gold batt from Advance Auto Parts. $122, minus 15% and a $25 gift card.

Tractor Supply has some nice looking batteries with caps. I have used them for years and am quite satisfied. Pull off their label, add a Lucas if you like. I actually bought Lucas battery caps many years ago off ebay and use them. Works for me. Larry

Yes Lonnie, I got my cables from Rhode Island Wiring. Very happy.
