MG TD TF 1500 - Hardtop for TD

I just received a hardtop for my TD. In good shape, needs paint and such. Is there a rubber strip around the bottom of the top at the rear and was there a seal to the windshield on these. I know they were aftermarket and this is fiberglass.

Tom, they are very generic. I'd suggest Googling and ask for 'Hardtop for MGB' . You'll probably get a bunch of leads toward suppliers. Smoothline is one that I recall. Bud

this is for a td.

I realize that. But, you'll get much more info about sources than if ask about TDs. I meant to say that the hardtops are NOT generic. You are going to have to hunt and peck for the type of seals that you need. Happy hunting. Bud

Tom, this picture may give you some ideas. My hardtop was stripped and needed a restoration when it arrived. There is rubber around the rear portion of the top plus rubber strips where the side curtains touch the flange of the top. The rear plastic window has its own installation rubber too. Luckily, all the rubber parts on mine were useable. Trying to find exact duplicates will be a real chore. I had no such luck. There is supposed to be a rubber strip at the front edge of the top where it sits on top of the windshield but I don't have that part.

Here is a photo of the top as installed on my TD. The side curtains are customized 3 bow top curtains that I tailored to suit and had covered by a top shop.

I had a Paris Plastics hardtop on my E-Type back in the 70's. It had at best a generic seal at the bottom.

Check out Steele Rubber for a very very comprehensive selection of automotive rubber.

I have no doubt you'll find what you need.

Tom,

Check with McGregor MG Parts in Canada. http://www.macgregorukcarparts.com/
They have historically been an excellent source of latches, seals and trim for hardtops. Tom B. in Hudson has used them with good success.

Thanks for all the info. it was super helpful, the picture was great. Mine is in nice shape but does need to be sanded and painted. Lew, thanks for the tip on the rubber.

Tom,
Do you know what brand of hardtop it is? Pictures?
If you are successful finding rubber seals to fit please post what you find, as I also would like to find new rubber for my Plasticon "Elvis" hardtop.

correction: mine is an Astro "Elvis"-not plasticon.

Paris Plastics were made just outside Pittsburgh, PA (might have had a plant in Florida too) New Kensington as I recall and were still in business a couple of years back. I believe they also made the front and rear wings for the 'MG-MIGI' for that company in the Dakotas, name escapes me now. They made several different tops for British cars but don't know about the TD/TF's/ FOG
