MG TD TF 1500 - Harting Fuel Pumps

Are they still in business, if so, who sells them? PJ

Paul S Jennings

Paul,

Going by a 75 year old memory I think I was told they are out of business. My Harting is still running well after some adjustment advice and a points cleaning. Do not order SU parts they do not fit. They are a very rugged pump. You may be able to clean up and adjust. Someone will be along to give you a clue. Good luck.

Paul,

I think I have a couple boxed away somewhere that you might be able to use for parts.

They are yours if you want them.

I have what I believe is a Harting pump as well. It says "Hardi" on the end and "made in Germany". My TF has sat for many years and I am getting things to the point of starting the engine. The fuel side of the pump had a lot of grey looking sand like powder that poured out, but the diaphram and elecrical part (including points) look pretty good. I cleaned it up somewhat and connected it to the battery (also grounded it) but got nothing. I do not know anything about this manufacturer's pump. I read in the previous post that they are probably out of business. Does anyone have any knowledge of how to troubleshoot these pumps or adjust them? It looks like it could still have life in most parts of it. Thanks, George

The Hardi pump is very good if not somewhat noisy. I have one on my Morris Minor for the last 8 years with no problem. They are not polarity sensitive.

I apologize. My pump is a Hardi pump made in Germany. There is still a page for thecompany and I have emailed them. Still, any information anyone may have on Hardi pump is appreciated. Thanks, George

George - Wat are your questions,I may be able to help you. Cheers - Dave

Thanks Dave. I need to know how to troubleshoot what the cause of the electronic part is not working. Everything looks really good. I cleaned up the contact points. I have no power at all when I hook it up. Well I should say it does not seem to work at all when I hook it up directly to the battery and ground. The rest of the pump, except for the sand like stuff in the fuel area, looks like it should work. Do the contact points get adjusted the same as an SU? Could the adjustment be the problem? I know nothing of this pump and very little (except for what the shop manual says) about the SU pump. Thanks again, George

George - try cleaning the points with some 400 grit sand paper. If that gets some action out of the pump, you might try adjusting the points. The adjustment is done with a hex head screw on the upper contact set. You will have to remove the piece that sits down on the hex head to prevent the screw from turning in order to adjust the points. The pumps of this type don't have any adjustment procedure, so it is kind of adjust and see if it you can get it to run by adjusting the points. You might check the condition of the diaphragm - seeing if the material has stiffened (if so, toss the pump - there are no repair parts available). Cheers - Dave

Thanks Dave, I did what you said and the pump started working like a new one. Now I am cleaning up the fuel area of the pump. Everything blew through clear and the check valve evens works correctly. Before I heard back from you, I found a website for Hardi Pumps in Germany. I emailed them and quickly heard back from Dr. Felsner and he told me what you did. Shows what great expertise there is here on the BBS! Thank you so much again, George
