MG TD TF 1500 - Heat shield Asbestos replacment
Thanks for the links Bruce, in the TC post for Asbestos replacement item. This looks like a good candidate for my TD Carb heat shield as well. The material needs to be replaced as I have to replace the whole thing, since the original developed cracks and makes a rattle now due to vibration. I can cut this to size and rivet it to the back if the shield facing the manifold. Does not need much and even one Omat at $34.0 will be more than enough material. Rod. ![]() |

FWIW: The heat shield made no difference in my vapor lock problem years ago. (TF) I may still have it lying around (can't recall if I gave it away...pretty sure I offered it years ago on here ...but can't recall if I had a taker!) Can look ...and if I have (and/or) can find it, yours for shipping cost. |

Will those rubber backed foil products work here? They say they do sound and heat. I just used it to replace the asbestos shield on my transmission cover.

Rod - Be very careful cutting the asbestos on that heat shield - asbestos dust can kill you if you breathe it in. Wearing a respirator will help, but the stuff gets on your skin and clothing to be spread in the air when you remove your cloths. Additionally, a heat shield is somewhere between minimally effective and totally useless in curing the heat soak problem. I put a heat shield on our TD years ago and it has had very little effect on the problem. Cheers - Dave |

Home Depot (and probably other big box stores) carry a fabric material about 18" X 18" used as a heat shield during soldering with a propane torch. Check in the Tools department near the torches and soldering materials. It's only a few bucks, but it is black in color. |

Take your point Dave about it being marginal. Been running without the think for 20 years now and can't say I have had any vapor lock problems. Also understand about the Asbestos risk and will take precautions. The stuff on the original heat shield looks like Webbing?? It is more like a fabric then what I would perceive as asbestos, but better to be safe than sorry. I have two almost 1/4" thick spacers between the intake manifold and the carb bodies. Seem to be made of a bakelite substance. Which stops most of the heat transfer from the mounting point to the carbs bodies. This shield would mainly diverts the hot air rising form the manifold when parked I believe. Also prevents any radiant heat to the float bowls from the same manifold source - directly behind them. I don't know how hot it gets in this place on the engine, but it can't be as hot as a torch flame. If there is a product out there just made of fabric with no rubber backing - all the better. So far my heater 1/2" rubber hose that runs through this area has not had an issue though. Something to do in the winter :) Rod. ![]() |

Rod, From your pic those look like the thinner spacers I took off my TF. I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow for you. If I can fit them in a TF should be a piece of cake in a TD and may help. |
