MG TD TF 1500 - Heater Pipes (New)

Here's the new pipes I'm fabricating. Making from aircraft aluminum high strength piping. PJ

I can't finish the back ends until I get the tub back, I'm using a duel fitting from a Triumph on the fire wall. PJ

Looks very good Paul , is the next step mounting a sacrificing anode in the system .LOL ?

LOL on the anode Gerard! The pipe is pretty strong and is used in fairly high pressure systems. I don't think it'll dissolve in my life time, or the kids either. Grin. PJ

I had to make a new pipe as the first one, in the picture was 1 inch too short and came to close to the front carb bowl. As we all know, we don't need any extra heat there. I made the new one 1 inch longer and put a dog leg in it and got it further away. Now I'm happy with it. PJ

Looks awesome Paul; how are you making these? Is someone doing this for you? I was wondering how to bend the pipe without crimping...
One project down the line is replacing my dorky hoses with pipe, but running them beneath the manifold.
Geoffrey M Baker

Geoffrey, I make these my self, done this years ago on aircraft tubing. Pack the tube tight with glass beading, sealing both ends. Mounting in a vise or stationary device with a metal curve starter piece, heat is applied with a soft broad flame. Aluminum is very critical for temperature control and when bending it, it must be done by feel and very slow, otherwise it'll fall apart. The glass should be up to temperature also. Each bend must be tempered by it's self and the tube must be cold before doing another bend.PJ

I'd read about packing with sand... Sounds like it's worth a try.Wouldn't steel be easier to work? Why did you choose aluminum?
Geoffrey M Baker

LOL, because I have a ton of it! You know, free is good! I almost painted it, but being a glutton for punishment, it got polished. Grin. PJ

Paul, talk about a professional and factory looking job, yours takes first prize. Beautiful work.
Jim Merz

lol, Paul... that's the best reason!
I think I'll use steel because it's a) probably cheaper if you have to buy it) and b) easier to bend without marking, under heat.
But you've given me a standard to strive to! Nice work!
Geoffrey M Baker

*Very* nice work Paul. Something I will consider when it is my time to focus for the heater. Well done!
Frank Cronin

Paul, I also like that little valve you have mounted into the thermostat. Where can I get a similar one?
Geoffrey M Baker

Geoffrey, Their fairly common, just type automotive heater valves in your search engine and quire a few should pop up. Some have longer necks than others. PJ
