MG TD TF 1500 - Helicoil
I need a helicoil M8-1mm but I can only find 1.25. Can I use that one with the original bolt. Need tap, insertion tool and whatever else also. Rob |

I recently bought the whole kit off ebay including 10 inserts for about $43. The inserts were only 10 mm long, I think 15 mm long would have been better. |

>Can I use that one with the original bolt? No -- with an M8-1.25 Helicoil you would need an M8-1.25 bolt (which of course would have a non-original head). |

Rob - You won't find 10 - 1 mm helicoil kits at the usual places such as Home Depot or Lowe's. I got the kit I have from our local NAPA, but they had to order it. You should be able to find them at McMaster - Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/ or MSC - http://www.mscdirect.com/ If all else fails, Uni-Thread in England http://www.uni-thread.com/ carries them. Oops, didn't think of this in time to edit my original post. You can save yourself some money by just ordering the coils and the tap and make your own insertion tool out of a 8 - 1mm bolt (or I can make one for you). I can also let you know what size drill to use. Cheers - Dave |

Bought mine from McMasters. A little pricey but were kinda caught in a corner on tools. You can't go to Harbor Freight for what we need! PJ |

Thanks guys. ROb |

David, I see your point about saving money. That insertion tool is quite expensive. How do you use the bolt as an insertion tool, or if you made me one what will you need from me? Thanks for the help, Rob |

Speaking from experience! Don't mess around, get the proper kit. They're a pig to get out if you cross thread them, which you probably will do if you use a 1.25. You can't get them out by turning the tool counter clockwise as the tang breaks off. A 1.25 will NOT work. I did find out that if the helicoil is shorter than the bolt, then sometimes the broken end of the tang catches on the end of the bolt as you unscrew the bolt and draws the helicoil out. Only way I found to get them back out and it doesn't always work! AJ |

Rob - E-mail me direct at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net and we can discuss what I will need to make up an insertion tool for you. Cheers - Dave |
