MG TD TF 1500 - Help camshaft removal

This is the first time I have worked on a TD engine but have done other british car engines. I have the entire engine apart but I can not remove the camshaft. I have page A.16 open and looking at F. A.18 and 19 in the manual.

I am having a problem with finding and removing the dowel screws.

What am I missing?

Thanks

You can see one of them safety wired in this picture to the right of the dip stick. The oil pump needs to be removed along with the distributor and a "c" clip on the cam shaft before removal.

Joe Please E mail me for camshaft information.
LaVerne, the oil pump does not need to be removed, nor the c clip on the rear of the cam.

Joe - Remove the middle dowel bolt. As you pull the cam forward to remove it, you are also removing the center cam bearing, which is often tight. Once it is free of the bearing journal, you can split it in two and remove it, after which the cam will pull forward and out. Be careful not to hit the lobes as you remove it.

Joe I recently went down this road. Check the archive under "Replacing the Camshaft" which gives a blow by blow description of both removal & installation. If replacing the cam with the engine in the car, as I did, the oil pump does have to be removed & the engine jacked up at the front to allow this to happen. Unless you plan to replace the rear bearing leave the rear dowel alone. You should read "Valve Springs for Roller Lifters" in the archive before considering a roller cam. There's plenty in the archive on this subject. If you contact me at pjbm at bigpond dot com I'm happy to share my experience with you. Good luck! Cheers

Thank to all for all the help.

Just one more quick one. On my TR6 you can buy a lighter flywell or have the old one ground to lighten it for better performance. Has anyone done this to the TD? If so how much needs to come off?

Joe - I am sure you will find a number of posts on this topic already in the archives.

JWP, you can safely take off around 4 pounds from the flywheel. More if you have a talented machinist. It makes a bit of difference in throttle response.
