MG TD TF 1500 - Help solve this mystery
I've checked all my photo's, parts illustration book, etc., and can't seem to figure out what went here. Definitely a bolt can go here, but for what?? Was hoping someone can help before I go too far ahead installing the engine and the radiator since access to this would be very difficult if I found out after the fact. See the following pictures. Thanks in advance. Frank ![]() |

I should have added this is an early TF 1414. |

Good question, but I think the answer may be nothing. Here's a picture I took of my TD as I was tearing it down. The hole is there, but it's so full of crud that you can't see it in the photo. Joe ![]() |

MG designers planned well ahead and their intent was to confound future restorers. My TF has that hole but it never appears to have been used for anything but a reservoir for grease and dirt. |

Nothing goes there that I know of! Hard to say what it was for. Possibly used on another model where this chassis could have been used. Abington did funny little things like that at times. Here's my 55. ![]() |

Thanks guys for the help. I was going crazy thinking I may have taken something off before snapping a catalogue picture of it during disassembly – a bolt for a P-clip for “something”…. Thanks again. Frank |

I don't know if it was intended for anything but I put a bolt in it with a P clip for the wiring that runs to the driving lights. Figured I might as well make use of it. |

Maybe the same crossmember was used on a Y-type or something ? Pretty sure the same hole is there on TD frames, will look this weekend. |

I think it was an attachment for the front jack with the jack-all system that was installed on the YB, and YT cars. Can't remember exactly, but I remember seeing a jack attached somewhere around there. |

The attached photo is from an old MG Story (circa 1960) book I have. I've studied the photo but since I don't know what the jack-All system is supposed to look like, I am unable to say I can see it. Anyway, here it is for what it's worth. Jud ![]() |
