MG TD TF 1500 - High Hopes ?
Well as the saying goes, there's no limit on what you can ask for something, but getting it is another story. This is in the UK I believe, just took notice of it. Wow. PJ ![]() |

Hi Paul, That would be around the top end but attainable if a good on.In the this months Octagan bulletin there are 2 TFs one at $46,100 and $42,900 plus one at $24,960 which sounds more reasonable to me. Everybody, don't think you can send your cars over here for a quick buck, we don't want your silly pedal boxes! Very few TF's stayed in the UK and are now quite desirable for this reason, especially XPEG's. Ray TF 2884 |

HHuumm,,, I wonder why there isn't a tonneau covering the ugly folded down hood? Not even any snaps visable,,,, Steve |
Steve Wincze |
I am certainly not a fan of the two tone paint job, at least not the shade on the fenders. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. Jim |
James Neel |
Re the lack of a tonneau cover, surely that wasn't original? The hood was nailed in place at the rear, and there was no provision for Lift-the-Dots, or whatever, except at the corners. David |

The half-tonneau was standard ex factory. Odd that the guards seem to be correct Birch Grey and then they apparently lost the plot with the tub. Was a chassis number given? Matthew. |
M Magilton |
I didn't see any numbers Matthew. PJ |

Thank you Paul. Matthew. |

Matthew, I checked their website and they have a picture of the data plate. Chassis number 8335. Engine number XPEG 2353 |
Max Irvine |
What's with 4 numbers for the engine? My car is 8353 and the engine number is 654.![]() |
Paul S Jennings |
Paul, Engine #'s were pretty much "random". Mine : 7427, a earlier car than yours (Oct 11-12th) has engine XPEG 1212. |
David Sheward 55 TF1500 # 7427 |
This car is 46 cars before mine. David |

Wouldn't the half tonneau also have some sort of snaps in the tub side at the forward end of the boot, just behind the seat back?? Steve |
Steve Wincze |
Steve: Yes. The last half tonneau LTD studs are right at the seat back top on the tub.![]() |
Christopher Couper |
David, I agree that engine numbers were random but they would normally roughly track the chassis number. Paul, Is your engine number the same on the firewall data plate and on the engine? |
Max Irvine |
Chris that piping is a great match to the body colour. |
P Hehir |
Max - what you say about engines roughly tracking chassis numbers is broadly correct; but engine numbers a few hundred out of range are not unusual in cars produced on the same day. Early in the XPEG run there were a group of engines that had to be removed from the cars to which they were originally fitted, due to some mechanical fault probably identified in final road testing. These problem engines were removed from the cars into which they were originally fitted, and were sent back for repairs; the cars were fitted with other engines and sent on their way. After being repaired the engines (7 in this case) were returned to the supply, and were fitted to later cars - Paul is quite right in suggesting that engines in the 2,000 range would normally have been fitted to his car. The "Engine Change" situation explains his anomaly. It is interesting to remember that TF cars, at least, definitely came down the line in color batches, made clear by the production records I have. It's hard to know about TDs, since there is no color code in the production records, unlike TFs. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thank you Max. This car was also on Ebay in 2010. I thought it looked familiar. Paul's engine number is original according to the T Register production records. Peter, thank you. ;-) Matthew. |
M Magilton |
Tom, Thanks for the explanation. Having worked at a Ford Assembly Plant they too swapped engines at the end of the line after mechanical problems. |
Max Irvine |
My car is matching numbers. Here's a shot of the engine before I started restoring the car. PJ![]() |
