MG TD TF 1500 - High oil pressure

have recently replaced the original horizontal oil filter assembly with the replacement that takes modern spin on oil filters. thinking that modern oil needs modern oil filters, the problem is the oil pressure when cold runs at 80+lbs above 1000rpm still runs at 60lbs when hot and tickover is 45lbs hot. before the new oil filter ran 50lbs when hot and 25lbs which I would consider normal.
Any ideas as I now have more oil leaks.

Curious if all you did was change oil filter adaptor and filter type. I noticed no change in my oil pressure after doing that switch.
Did you check the oil relief ball and spring? Regards, Tom

Make sure your adapter feeds into the filter from the outer part and out from the center. Some I have encountered are inadvertently reversed. If that is the case you are going against the anti-drain back valve in the filter.

Thomas was it the routing of the lines or have you identified another reason?

Thanks

If the filter assembly swap was the only change, it would seem the old one had significantly more resistance.

The oil filter is obviously in series between the pump and engine, so the pressure gauge measures the pressure after the filter. Hard to imagine the pressure drop across the old filter was that great, but now it seems you have less resistance through the paper element.

Lew, if the new filter is installed with lines reverse, the oil pressure would be very low.

A friend has a TF with 100psi oil pressure and I've given thought to fabricating a simple relief valve/hose assembly so he can adjust his pressure down externally. I'm rebuilding another XPAG and may add that to ours to replace the original ball/spring relief. If you have interest in one to reduce the pressure, email me

A better filter may very well have more resistance to the flow of oil than your original. Like so many things, it's a trade off, you give up some flow, and oil pressure, but get cleaner oil. The old felt filters had so much resistance that the filter bypass valve opened when the engine was cold. There was a light that would go on when this occured on my old Mini-cooper.
