MG TD TF 1500 - Hints for changing gear box

Next week the gearbox will arrive.

The original gearbox doesn't have the support flange for the original bracket. The spare will be more original. What is the right manner - mounting the bracket onto the gearbox or mounting the bracket on the chassis? I guess the first will make it easier

I recommend mounting the rear engine bearer bracket onto the gearbox before installing the gearbox.

Check the welded corners of the bracket. The welds are sometimes broken and need to be rewelded. The sides may be warped also.

Chamfer the corners of the support rubbers where they contact the rounded insides of the bracket. If you don't, then the rubber will not fully seat into the bracket and you will never get the nut onto the fork.

I found that the rubber rebound bumper from Abingdon Spares compressed a little more than the one from Moss (US) so that I could attach the nut to the fork.

Note the way that the cup of the washer faces in the photo.

Were the flanges on the cross member missing, or were the "wings" on the rear case missing? Was your old gearbox secured to the cross member? If not, it looks like the gearbox and rear of the engine would have flopped around a lot. I don't have the experience, but other forum members can tell you what to check in the front engine mounting area for damage.

The eye for the fork was broken on my rear case. Is that the item that was missing on your gearbox? Sorry for the multiple posts about the missing part. I believe that the info in my original posts answered your question.

Lonnie,
The eye of the fork is an easy repair.

And after.
You have to cut out a small section of the rubber for the bolt head and nut. It is actually stronger than the original arrangement.

As usual Declan and Lonnie's details are exacting and correct!

Thanks Declan,

I used an even easier solution -- I replaced the broken rear case with one that had an intact eye. My photo was an effort to clarify the original poster.

I have used your photos to explain a fix to owners with the problem. Looks like the fork can slip a little left and right on the threaded bolt. Is that a problem?

Thank you Lonnie

the wings of the rear case are completely milled off. The PO has designed a special solution.

I'm also looking for housings for the gear box (1 thread for the bracket of the exhaust ist broken out) and for the rear gear box (because the wings are absent).
