MG TD TF 1500 - hood and windscreen fitting.

Whilst the car in question is a TC I'm sure the practicalities apply to all models. I have a new tub that I'm shortly going to fit the windscreen, bow and hood to. The question is the best way to go about it. Obviously being a new tub there are no pre-drilled holes for either the windscreen supports or the bow. I still have the old tub but then there is no guarantee that the tub is exactly the same. As there are obviously three items that need to mould together to achieve the correct tension in the hood knowing how others have achieved this would be a great help.

I can only suggest you get the screen angle from another TC.The fore and aft you can get from the old tub then place the assembled screen and supports on the new.
The hood frame is easy, fit the assembled side screens to the tub and doors. Put the frame on the windscreen a with an adjustable prop to hold it up.
Make sure the rail above the door is parallel with
the door side scree top bar. lay the new hood on the frame and see how it fits adjust as necessary.
I have done a couple for mates during lockdowns.
I will dig up the photos, they are of a 2 bow TD
but will give you an idea

As you can see this hood is too low and the rail is waiting to be moved up for the correct overlap fit. Make it slightly low and jack it up to tension. Fiddley. Also make sure the movable rail folds back into the tub with clearance
Where it wraps around the front wood is messy, I can't find the drawing of how it goes but I am sure somebody on the BBS will have it

Thank you Ray. On the point of the windscreens location/angle and using possibly another TC as a reference. This not currently being available what struck me from your pictures is that I could possibly use the angle/location of the front side screens to determine the windscreen location.Your thoughts (and others ) appreciated.

I checked, and that is what the owner of the first one I did used.
When trial fitting don't forget to allow for the sidescreen canvas to get the screen/sidescreen fit.
It is all suck it and see, although the tubs are jig built no two are the same.

Dave Braun's site has a good pictorial of his hood installation on his TD. http://www.dbraun99.com/MGTD15470/Weather%20Equipment/Hood%20installation/index.html

I thought I had posted my variation on Dave's installation but I can't find it in the archives. My variation is that the canvas is not permanently attached to the frame so it can be easily removed completely for more room in the boot and easier folding of the top. I have a Word write-up with pics but it's about 5+ megs. I can email it to you if you want it.

Hood off.

I have pops at the rear to make it easy to get gear out.
How do you fasten the front, there is a fair old vacuum over the top, at speed my hood is pulled off the non fixed bows. (TF 3 bow)

I have a sleeve at the front of the canvas that I insert a steel flat into and then hold it to the wood frame with three machine screws that go into brass thread inserts that go into the wood. The screws show when the hood is up but that doesn't bother me (originally police be damned!). Anyway, I rarely put the top up anyway and for the last year it's resided in the corner of my shop.
