MG TD TF 1500 - hot tank versus hot oven cleaning
Dear friends, Today I went to a machine shop to have my spare td block hot tank cleaned . I found the shop owner had to dump his tank due to environmental demands. He bought a oven to clean blocks . Sounds good to me and he showed some blocks he did . No problems with the cleanness. But here is my question : will the octagonal engine date plate hold up to the heat at around 500 F ?? ( approx. 260 C ) Your take on this will be appreciated Gerard |

I wouldn't gamble on it. It's simple to drive out the rivet while you have access to the inside of the block. Save it to drive back in after you paint the block. (It's not really a rivet, but that's what I'm going to call it for simplicity's sake) Bud |

Bud, did they coat those with a sealer before they drove them in? I call them screw rivets, but that's just a personal reference. PJ |

Paul, I have no idea about originality. I would doubt it since there's no pressure to be concerned about and they're a snug fit. The i.d. plate itself would act as somewhat of a gasket. Screw rivet is a good descriptor. Somewhere in the archives is a thread about my search for some. I had to buy a bag of 50, as I recall. I used one, kept a couple, gave a few away and gave the rest to Abingdon Spares. Found the thread: Source for Engine ID Plate Drive Rivets. Bud |

Thanks Bud, drove rivet just out . What I didn't know is that octagonal plate consists of two flimsy plate's . 1 small round one and the octagonal . Now I'll let him cook my block . Thanks again, Gerard |

Good, Gerard. Hopefully, driving the screw rivet out from the inside kept it in redriveable condition. Hopefully, the number stamped on the top disc is the same as the number stamped into the block just above where the discs were. (Except for early engines, where it's on the bellhousing). Bud |

Yes BUD, they do match ( block and plate ) Gerard |

One thing people often forgot on hot tanking is that it really destroyed solder and aluminum for example if left in for long periods like you would with a block. We ruined a lot of parts by forgetting them in the tank :-( |

Don't know about British Colombia, but most of the shops in my part of the states moved to the dishwasher type cleaning units. Unsure what chemicals it uses, but it cleans parts and blocks very well and does not appear to damage brass or aluminum. |

The industrial parts washer Bruce mentions will not damage non-ferrous metals as long as the detergent they put in the tank is LOW ALKALINE. |
