MG TD TF 1500 - How big is too big?

G'day all,

I just tried to upload a photo to a new thread.
No success. The error message I got was that the photo/file was too large.(approx. 2.5 MB).
Is there a way to get around this?
New technology seems to have moved ahead of this site's capabilities!!
Perhaps this site needs to upgrade capability.
Anyone know how to contact the appropriate person?
I'm no tech wiz so perhaps I'm the one making mistakes.

Ciao for now. John.

John, If you are running windows, right click on the photo and open in Paint. Go to the upper left hand corner and click on the RESIZE button, the window will say 100%, type in 35% and hit ok. Save as what ever you want to name it and where you want it to appear, I use the desktop temporarily. PJ

Paul

thank you so so much.
I tried your suggestion and got tangled in the technology of...stuff.
My daughter came along and used your lead and bingo it worked.
Top marks to you and my daughter.
Now all I have to do is remember it all for next time.

Ciao for now John

I have the same problem with pics as much as I would like to share them it is simply too much of a hassle to re configure them in my limited capacity of comp knowledge I simply gave up and won't deal with it and post my pics on the FB MGTD enthusiasts site that gladly accepts my pics as is. I find the BBS forum outstanding in all other aspects but the the file sharing needs to be upgraded to match the current technology. Also more than a single pic should be able to be shared or viewed without having to close windows to view the next or go back to the text. It's JMHO but for us who aren't savvy to
Computers this is a major stumbling point to the total enjoyment of this site. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this but try as I might I can't get past this

In defense of the owners of this bulletin board, they don't make money from it. Therefore, they simply don't have the funds to compete with sites like Facebook or Picasa who can spend gazillions building the most attractive user interface. They have to use free or cheap software and low-cost hosting or they can't be in business at all.
So for us to expect the latest and greatest in features... is not really fair to them. I think they do a great job and the feature set on this bulletin board is pretty standard with most of the other (free) ones I've seen.
If we want free access, and the company of wonderful and knowledgeable people who will help us solve our endless MG related problems... we have to accept that there is a tradeoff.
I just want to compliment the owners and hosters of this BBS and the incredible amount of hard work they've put in over the years supporting the rest of us freeloading yahoos ... just because we all have one common interest, our love of old British engineering.

I take 2 steps to load images the 'correct' size for easy uploading, and then downloading.

Step 1:
Most everyday photos look perfectly fine when viewed at about 600 pixels wide. Every photo editor will have a utility to "resize" an image. Select whatever tab includes this tool and adjust the overall size of the IMAGE. It will look smaller on the screen until you zoom it to "1:1". This is what I'm actually going to see on the screen at my end, an image 600 px wide.

Remember, zooming on YOUR screen isn't changing the image size, it just makes it look smaller while you're looking at it.

Step 2:
Almost every reasonable photo editor will also have an "optimizer". This nifty utility shrinks the FILE size without changing the image size. This makes the file a fraction of it's size and much faster to upload and download. In Paint Shop, it's an "export" utility and is an alternative for 'save' and 'save as'. Most of the other choices and controls seen along the way are not all that important unless you're into publishing. Choose the simple path.

Most images will still look fine if 'optimized' from original size to around 25%. You won't notice the difference.

There are dozens of Youtubes on this, but find and follow the simple ones. One or two steps at most.

Ditto what Geoffrey said. Truthfully with my rather clunky computer and slow internet connection I'm pretty happy that this site stays with a simple (old? Obsolete?) platform. Jud.

If you are doing all this on your Android phone I import the photo into photoshop for Phones resize by half and export. Then upload onto the forum on the phone. Can't remember the last time I used my laptop!

Another option- stop using such monstrous images. That's unless you plan on 8x10 prints. Bud

Most of my photos are taken with my phone (an iPhone) which I then email to myself to get them into my desktop PC. The email process includes options for reducing the size of the image. I just choose the size that is less than one meg. That speeds up the email transfer and results in images ready to post on the bbs. Jud

I'm happy this site does pictures at all. It wasn't all that long ago that it didn't do any.

Likewise. That was the motivating factor for my starting Ttalk -- http://www.ttalk.info/picture_this.htm to show member's stuff. Bud
