MG TD TF 1500 - How can I bench test clock?

I recently acquired several parts to a 1952 TD. One of the pieces is a tachometer with the built-in clock. How can I bench test the clock to see if it is operational?
Thanks,
Kevin

Have a 12 V power supply or a battery connected between the spade connector (-) and one of the knurled nut on the casing(+).
Then push several times the center button on the back of the clock to initialize running.
Listen. If it's OK, you shoud hear the familiar tic tac tic tac. And the hands should turn.

Laurent.

Thanks, it appears to be dead.

Hello Kevin, Try really popping the button out a few times, not just push/release. There is a tiny contact pin/carbon brush deal that sparks every time the balance wheel rotates and eventually the pin burns off. Could just be stuck/gummed up also. Not sure who is rebuilding/repairing these clocks now. George

You could send it to
Hal Kramer [hkramer@nycap.rr.com]
He might be able to fix it for you.
Did a good job on mine in 2014.

First, open it and try to launch thoroughly the balance wheel manually.

If no success :

Mine was dead and it works now.Very rewarding job.

And there is Mike Eck at:
http://www.jaguarclock.com/ who can upgrade the winding mechanism to electronic for greater reliability. He is done a Smiths Jaguar clock for me.

Some electronic contact cleaner aimed at the contacts and a judicious application of very light oil on the bearings did wonders for my clock. It now keeps perfect time for the first time in 40 years. Worth a try before running the expense of a rebuild.

Some rebuilt clocks have been upgraded with a transistor-based circuit that requires the correct polarity (either positive or negative to ground). The clock won’t work if connected the wrong way.
