MG TD TF 1500 - how to clean the Hood ?
Here is a not so typical question for the mechanic guys: The Hood but more the Tonneau becomes dirty over the years. Thre are some spots where the Frame bows are located. I believe it Comes from my Car Cover, which maybe is not always clean. Anyway, first I have to find out what Kind of material the Hood is: 1) it is not Vinyl 2) it is not double Duck, it is a single ply 3) It can be single Duck, but it Looks more modern 4) it can be Stayfast but I don't believe that. 5) I think it is Mohair but not sure. It was made in 1992 from Hawthorne Seat Cover Center in Hawthorne, CA. I found the bill in the documents. Is the any method to identify what Kind of Material it is? Concerning the cleaning, I found something in the BBS Archive. Two recommendations are: 1) Foaming carpet cleaner 2) Woolite Cleaner in cool water Any other recommendations? Thank you Ganter ![]() |

...thats a good question...hard to know without being able to touch it... I would like to say that if it is a single layer, it most probably is canvas/duck... If it was made as a replacement this would be most common? Mine is also a Moss canvas top...one of the last they made... Detergent and water and soft, soft brush helped with some of my marks.... |

One of our club members said he washed his Moss tonneau in his washing machine on cold was with a small amount of Tide. Rich |

My top (all upholstery actually) was also made by Joe Namnam (of Hawthorne Seat Covers). I think it may be made of Robbins top material but I cannot be sure at this point. Anyway I remember Joe told me at the time to use Woolite on it and that's what I use today. |

By the way Guenter, Joes work was (and is?) assumed to be the finest T Series upholsterer in the world, so you have a special car there if he did the entire upholstery.![]() |

Chris, thank you for your answer. Yes, they made the entire Upholstery on my car, Hank Grigsby paid more than $3000 in 1992. By the way, did you know maybe one of the following persons? 1) Burns Cary Lee, Cambria, CA (first owner) 2) Hank Grigsby, La Chrescenta, CA (he made the restoration in 1992) 3) Nick Dianio, he was Hank's helper at that time. Henk get most of the parts he need from Mike Goodman's Sport Car Service, Van Nuys, CA (lot of bills came together with the documents. In 2002 the car was sold to Virginia where I buy it in 2007 (4 owners in total since 1953) I'm always interested on History, Stories or any background Information about my little sports car, if you know something, please let me know. If you have Pictures, that would be great. Please send by Email. In the enclosed Picture you can see the car before restoration and in the corner the car as it is today. The man in the white shirt, that’s me. See the license plate CA UIN597 I still have the plate. Thank you Guenter ![]() |

Guenter I successfully removed some stains from my Robbins hood using "Armorall Low Sheen", added bonus it provides protection. Graeme |

Wow. I would have listed that car in the graveyard. Great restoration. Mike Goodman was the person that trained Joe Namnam in the 60's and 70's to do such good work. I did know Hank. The spelling is actually La Crescenta. Its in the Los Angeles area. Butch Taras, who posts here periodically, might know the others. I do not know the others. Sorry. |
