MG TD TF 1500 - How to Flock

Read some of the on line articles on flocking. Does not read as hard to do. Anyone done it and have any tips? Doing my glove box.
Bruce Cunha

Yep. Send me an email Bruce. Important to use the correct material. After a search I found the correct stuff in Germany. I purchased a kilo as that was the smallest quantity I could buy and had PLENTY left over. Enough to do another 25 glove boxes! pjbm at bigpond dot com. Cheers

Here it is installed. I've since painted the exterior of the box black to seal it as the fiberboard does tend to absorb moisture from the air and so may sag. Cheers

Good work. The original flocking process used an electrostatic charge to orient the fibres so that they stood on end when being bonded to the substrate.

I received some of of Peter's flock material and it looks original.

I've got a vintage DeVilbiss flock gun, for what that's worth.

Having made and flocked 5 TD glove boxes, including the one pictured, I've found the best method is to spray the interior with a liberal coat of brown enamel paint, immediately dump a quantity of flock into the box, cover the opening with a plastic bag and shake vigorously for a minute or two. Tip out the excess and allow to dry. Works a treat. Cheers

What? No flocking gun?

Not needed LaVerne. Just an unnecessary expense. Cheers

The articles I read used this cardboard tube with a metal cap on one end with a hole in it.

Peter. I will drop you an Email.

Bruce Cunha

OK Bruce. If the box was installed you'd have no option but to use something like that. The method I recommend is to flock the box prior to installation. Just a few seconds to spray it and a minute or two of shaking. Job done. One the simplest and quickest tasks that I've undertaken. The boxes I've made for a few owners here all look terrific. Cheers

Have a "Like" LaVerne :-D

Peter. I have two glove boxes, one with a hole in it, so I can use it for practice. Sounds easy.
Bruce Cunha

Shame on you Matthew :-)

I had a late friend who was a woodworker and one of the items he produced was jewelry boxes which he lined with flocking. The "gun" he used looked a lot like an old bug sprayer. A fair sized tube canister with a pump handle on the end ( think grease gun) that when pushed would blow a fine mist of the flocking material.
