MG TD TF 1500 - How to install solid rivets for plate and badgeer

Hello,

I wish to attach the patent plate to the sidescreen frame and the “Auster” badge to the windscreen.

Is there any useful hint or recommended procedure to deal with the solid rivets in both cases?

Thanks for your assistance.

Jesús

PS: Sorry, I cannot edit the title and correct the typo.

The Auster badge is held in place with screw rivets. I think Moss has them. Not sure about the side screen frame. PJ

There is no magic here. Select one that fits the hole and is long enough. If I remember correctly the Auster badge was the driver.

Just pad everything underneath with a T shirt or something that will eliminate scratches. A terry towel might be too soft but with one layer it should be OK.

And you have to do this on a hard surface too. A workbench might give too much unless its real solid. I have done them on the concrete floors in a pinch with the padding above.

Thanks for the fast responses.

I should have made clear that my question was really on the procedure to attach the rivets. In the case of the patent plate, I guess that the rivet must be hammered from behind, and without the use of special tools, my worry was how to avoid marring or scratching the plate. Chris’ advices are very useful here.

The Auster badge rivets go into blind holes that in my case are smaller than the aluminum rivet. Shall I simply knock the rivets into the holes?

Yes. Just drive them in. You can use a softer hammer if you are worried but I have even seen originals that had a slightly flat top on the Auster ones. They really should go in easily.

Back to the side curtain rivets: You need to protect the frames from scratching but at the same time provide enough firmness to flatten the soft rivet. This is why I suggested the T shirt vs the towel.

If you have a spare rivet or two you might want to drill some holes in something and practice pounding the rivets flat before you do the patent plate. Once they are on you can only grind them off from the back side to try again.
