MG TD TF 1500 - How to install the wheel arch bracket

I have some padding under the wheel arch covers on my 53 TD. When I install the wheel arch bracket the material deforms and look rather shoddy. If anyone else had this problem what was your solution for installing the wheel arch bracket without too much deformation?

The thickness and density of your padding is going to determine the amount of “deformity” you have when the bracket is installed. A picture of TT he deformity would possibly help in answering your question

Bill, it is the foam material that From the Frame Up supplies. It's about 1/8 inch thick.

I'm working on that at present. The first point is that I made durable cardboard templates of my wheel arches and then took them to the upholsterer and stood beside him while he sewed them together. Assembly method, stitch length, thread colour and thickness etc are perfect. I've glued the felt to the metal arches using felt from Spotlight, a haberdashery chain here and exterior grade PVA glue. Horst's approach using the thick stuff doesn't produce the correct feel. Today's vinyl is thicker than the original Rexine, so 1/8" felt, modern vinyl, PVA glue and plenty of care when gluing the vinyl to the metal skin and the two exterior floorboards will produce a very pleasing result. I have the original covers from a TF with the black felt material in my possession and the combined result of my approach produces an original finish. I'm really happy with it and as you all know, I'm very difficult to please :-) Cheers

With the bracket the thickness beneath it is the determining factor. I should have made that clear in the previous post. I intend to glue both the arch seam and the area around the bracket to the underfelt to eliminate any suggestion of puffiness. Cheers

The original felt did not compress much. New materials seem to compress a lot. Plus I think most suppliers are provide much thicker materials than original.

I would put something fairly non compressible under the bracket. You could use heavy fiberboard, plywood, plastic. Just about anything that just gives a little bit.

Thanks guys. I actually like the TC method of the bracket poking through a slit in the wheel arch covering. I may just double up the underlayment under the bracket and see if that prevents too much compression of the wheel arch covering.
