MG TD TF 1500 - Hylomar Blue

Good day all:

I will try once more as some computer Gremlin seems to have snatched my previous attempt and it went "poof" ?

Right then; I have a persistent petrol pump leak which is really "picking my pectorals" !

It is an SU. pump, electronic type (no points) and has a secondary joint (gasket) fitted between the lower surface of the diaphragm and the top face of the body plate (sandwich piece). No other prior pump had that joint as far as I know ?

I have been in touch with MR. Dave DuBois, of our forum, and the following was suggested as a sealant for the separate pieces and joints.

Permatex, Hylomar, HPF (High Performance Formulation), Fuel Resistant, Gasket Dressing and Flange Sealant. (Blue in colour).
Permatex Item # 25249.

I smartly trotted off to my local NAPA distributor, only to find that Item # 25249, does not appear in the firms' system. (an U.S. of A. purchase product)

However; Permatex, Permashield, Fuel Resistant, Gasket
Dressing and Flange Sealant, Item # 85420 (later found to be blue in colour) does exist. There is no mention of the name "Hylomar" nor the HPF notation on the tube, but there is a fine print advisory on the item packaging that reads: "compare to Hylomar" ? Also on the packaging are four instructions, the number three of which reads "allow ample drying time to completely evaporate solvent" whatever that might be is unknown to myself ?. A point never heard of according to Mr. DuBois.

I have used, also as suggested, a medium strength thread sealant on the inlet, outlet unions and the filter plug. (oddly enough that is blue in colour).

Perhaps, Someone will be able to further suggest a plan of action before I bin the bugger ?
Cheers then respectfully:

Jack, Permatex' Hylomar is their #85249. Try that number at your local NAPA. Bud
Bud Krueger

Jack, Moss also carries Hylomar.

Bud - Just tried 85249 on the NAPA web site and all I got was "sorry, no results found" Cheers - Dave

Gents,
Not sure if this will help or not.

It doesn't appear to me that Permatex no longer makes the Hylomar sealer. I seem to remember way back in the beginning of time (that means more than two weeks ago) that Hylomar had shut Permatex down on marketing Hylomar. From everything I have read recently, the stuff that permatex used to sell is now Hylomar M or Hylomar Advanced Formula. - Cheers, Dave

The SU pump should have a gasket (AUB809) fitted between the diaphragm and pump body.

I never use any sealant on the diaphragm or body and never have leaks.

Go to http://hylomar.com/ for info about Hylomar

I just purchased a tube ob Ebay for under $5.00 & shipped free.

The "real" (non-Permatex licensed) stuff was available through your local Jaguar dealer as of a few years ago. I think they packaged it in their green box and charged twice as much for it, but you could get it at their parts counter.

The Permatex is a different formula, but I don't know if that really matters.

I used the hylomar blue - 85249 - to seal gas rank fitting weeping.

bought it thru NAPA I believe.

it appears it is no longer available from Permatex, however they have a product 85420 which is described the same or almost the same as old 85249.

check the Permastx web site.
