MG TD TF 1500 - Indicator switch

The indicator switch on my TF works fine, but the thread has gone that holds it to the dash. The bakelite has just got too worn to hold the large bezel nut. Has anyone seen the problem before and come up with a fix please? The only thing that I can think of at present is to turn off the thread and find / make a sleeve with the correct thread - if I knew what it was, but I've enough other stuff to do without this. Yes, I could buy another switch, but would prefer to try to fix up this one first. Thanks. Dave H

Mine are stripped, too. I wrapped the threads with Teflon tape, then screwed on the bezel nut. It's held fine for the past ten months.

For another car's parts both in Bakelite and plastic, I dressed the area to ensure a 'toothed' grip area then pasted the area with an epoxy paste, pressed saran wrap into the threaded part, pressed the paste onto the saran wrap and pressed the threaded part in place. Once set the Saran allowed the parts to be unscrewed. Worked like a charm.

Test for compatibility and technique of course.

MAdrdus: I did something similar to one of the bell housing to sump bolts. Instead of plastic wrap I put a bit of oil on the bolt first and then used J Weld. I have not tried to remove it since but I am hoping it will do as you stated, break loose when its time to unbolt it.

Locktite makes a product called "Fomrathread", Google and check it out. Technique sounds similar to what the guys did above. George

Thanks for the ideas guys. Not seen the Threadformer product before, and not even sure it's sold here, but looks interesting. I suspect it, and any repair with epoxy resin might work best on an internal thread. I'll try the Teflon tape first and if the thread is too far gone will resort to the epoxy method.
