MG TD TF 1500 - Jack question.

Chris Couper shows a King Dick jack on his MG TD page which would suggest that KD jacks were standard on the TD. But a very thorough site dealing with British car jacks lists the Shelly 6" jack as being supplied with the MG TC and the MG TD. http://www.classic-british-car-jacks.uk/shelley_jacks.htm The site lists the KD B1077 as being supplied with the MG TF. http://www.classic-british-car-jacks.uk/King_Dick_Jacks.htm Can any one shed light on these differences.

My TF 8353 has a Shelly 6 inch jack and has been in the car for many years. Owned by a doctor, wrecked by his brother or brother in law, it sat for over 20+ years in storage. I believe it's the original jack. I will say this, I don't believe it's ever been used. PJ

Tim both the Shelley 6" 10DL and the King Dick - presumably the B 1077 - were originally supplied with the TD and the TF, so either would be correct. However as these jacks were fitted to other cars as well, the correct jack for the TD & TF had the 'saddle' type lifting point, not the 'L' shape. The pic below is of a King Dick jack that had never been separated from the original owner's TF tool kit. I was given the opportunity to inspect, catalogue & photograph the kit before the car was sold to a museum. It had been owned by him since new. Cheers

Peter, even though mine is a Shelly, that looks like my jack with the saddle top. PJ

The Shelley and KD companies had business and family connections. TF tool kits often swapped between Shelley and KD.

The British jack site is great. My love of rooting around for tools for the TD and more recently for my Austin Healey 100 let me to find a rare MGA Jack that is now featured on the site. One thing I have learned from many experts that I have spoken with during my on-going quest to complete both kits is that British car makers, post war, were not about to stop the shipment of a completed vehicle because of a shortage of the odd tool. So while it would be nice to say that 100% of all kits were the same at for any given time period we can not be sure that this was the case. They would happily substitute a close equivalent.

What was the original color of the King Dick jack in my TF? Peter’s photo looks like black Japanning.

The original in the TF kit was satin/semi gloss black. I've purchased another 3 originals and they were all this colour. Not familiar with Japanning other than as a matte finish on 19th century flooring and Victorian furniture. Cheers

Peter, It's basically just black lacquer. You Tube has a bunch of boring videos of guys painting old woodworking planes with it. I've had very good success with Duplicolor Roll Bar and Chassis paint.
