MG TD TF 1500 - Jaeger oil/water meter
I'm looking for a NON restored unit, seems like there are plenty of restored ones on ebay. If anyone has one, please email me at geoffreybaker at cox.net. For an early 51 TD... Thanks! |

Actually I think the ones on ebay require you to exchange the rebuilt ones with a core. Check out this one: 291085807971 Is modern but the housing looks the same. The restorers usually replace the glass, bezel, face and dials so it might be the ticket you need. It's only $12 plus shipping so you don't have much to loose. |

So you are saying that the more modern units can replace the old ones just by replacing the face & dials? I didn't know that! |

Out of curiosity, could a Smith's water/oil meter be rebuilt with a Jaeger face? They look vey similar except for the faces... |

Geoff: I am speculating it can. Don't know for sure. The housing and arrangement look the same. You might have to take some measurements to be a bit more positive. But oil pressure and water temperature are the same in any age :-) |

Geoff, early '51 TDs (before 2/22/52,Car #13914) would not have the combination oil/water gauge. Bud |

Thanks Bud! |

Bud. That's true but if I was not building a concours car and did not have an oil pressure gauge, I would 'upgrade' the car with the split gauge myself. He would just need to buy the brass fitting for the radiator for the temp tube if he has the plug. There is one on ebay right now. |

I have an oil pressure gauge; it's just pretty beat. So either I a) restore it myself, b) pay to have someone restore it, or c) upgrade to a restored split meter. It probably won't cost much more to go with the split meter (the people I've talked to will take my "core" in exchange), and my car is so far from being "concourse" it's not even funny... it's just a nice old MGTD in need of endless attention. I'm leaning towards the cheapest option - restoring my current oil meter with a new decal on the face and a thorough cleaning. Just researching all my options! :) |

The temperature gauge on my combo oil/temp gauge does not work (heck, it's probably not even hooked up - the PO replaced it with an AutoZone unit hanging on the bottom of the dash). I've been reading all the threads about slpicing the tubing, not blowing your self up with the ether and the like and wonder if anybody has tried replacing the innards of the old temp gauge with some kind of electronic thingy that uses a thermister for the sensor and is connected to the sensor with a nice flexible wire instead of a rather stiff tube? Geoffrey, if you want to go for the cheapest option than you could consider what I did: cleaning the face with a bit of toothpaste does miracles. I decided to live on without a temperature dial for my early TD. On the behavior of the oilpressure i can see when the engine is getting on operating temperature. It goes down from the 50 erea to the 40 erea. And whenever i want to check temp, I reach a bit forward and hold my hand along the bonnet openings and feel the temp of the outcoming air. And i ask my lady to do the same on the passenger site. Well, not too scientific but it adds to the fun of driving a classical car. Huib |
