MG TD TF 1500 - Knob for TD dimmer
Gentlemen, What is your recommendation for a suitable knob for the dimmer shaft in the TD central dash (yellow circle in the photo? TIA. Jesús

Something looks odd on your rheostat. I think it may have been replaced. The originals had a flat area that the set screw wrested against.
Christopher Couper
Thanks for the response, Chris. Maybe this is why I found difficult to source a correct knob from the usual vendors. Below there is a photo of the rheostat that came with the car, after restoration. Is this the correct one? Jesús
J Benajes
Chris, There were two types- screw on and push on (had a spring loaded plunger thingy?). Jesus's is an original screw on type. There is a raised groove that slips into the slot, and the screw into the threaded hole that you can't see. Your picture is of the knob that fits his- fairly sure . The brass washer in the picture is supposed to be behind the panel, not in front. Correct is a flat chrome washer, that may be why it looks odd. George

My 51 TD has two knobs both of which match Jesus' knob to the let, the one with flat lobes. Mine is not a rheostat, just an on/off switch. What is correct for an early TD?
Geoffrey M Baker
My TD from 1950 has only the switches. W. Müller TD 1824

Jesús, don't we wish we all had 3-D printers! I don't so here's the crude solution that I did for my TD after it turned out that the knob supplied by big supplier was apparently actually for an MGA. http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=2013071402102618642 Jud

Geoff. 1st Feb 1951. No rheostat just two switches. Cheers Peter TD 5801

TD7191, early 1951 build, just has two on/off switches, as shown in left switch.

George: I forgot about the keyway. Also his bezel is rounded over instead of squared off like the picture I posted. I suppose there could be various versions of the bezel, I am just used to seeing the squared off ones. I think the push on ones with the spring loaded little button were the replacements (maybe also MGA?). These were also longer and had an arrow on the face. I replaced mine at one point and cut down the know to make it the same as the original. Then later I found my original knob and gave it a quick restoration.

Chris,You are right about the outer ring being more rounded that square. Suppose it could be a collection of bits? George

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. So it appears that I have on f the correct rheostats but that there are not replacement knobs at least available from the usual suppliers. I will try to adapt some other knob from another application, as done by Jud. Jesús
