MG TD TF 1500 - Leather Luggage Rack Bag

Just to take a break from all the hardware problems, I thought I'd prep my TD for some spring journeys. Found this old leather suitcase on eBay which I thought might look good on the rack and provide some storage space for anything needed for a trip. Added an MG emblem to make it look more like it belongs. Printed the emblem, cut it out with an Xacto and used it as a stencil to spray paint it on the bag a couple of places. Added some shadow lines to give it dimension, and WA LA!, I'm ready for Spring. No photos on the car yet, I'm still in Florida.

It will look good,,,, until it gets wet !

Good point. Plan to make a clear plastic cover for it.

Looks good Mike, thanks for posting. The stencil idea will help disguise some of the age warts on this one. I bought it to help keep me motivated - imagining how I will use it when I have finished assembling my giant Mechano kit.

Mike,

Congrats, I like the looks.

For $15 I found a vintage alumium suitcase on eBay, sprayed the lid in the color of the grill slats, added 2 leather straps and some badgework...

Same problem when it's raining though...

we decided against the vintage look,,, had to go with something weather proof,,,Rubber Maid with c asters,, just wheel it into the hotel

I like it Mike. I found a similar one at an old wares store whilst travelling through NSW for my TC - cost $40. Thought that I had won tatts! Had two leather hold down straps made for it by a local sadler - they cost $400.

Here is my TF with a HUGE luggage box on extended bumper bars. Back in the day.

Tom....Were those removable extenders for the bumper, or was it a permanent weld to the frame?

Mike, the prior owner did this. The photo was with papers when I bought the car. They must have been removable, as I see no evidence of welding back there.

It looks like Steve and I have the same trunk. After strapping it down for a few years I modified it for security. I made some threaded hooks that attach to the rack and go up through holes in the bottom of the trunk and are secured with wing nuts. My concern with straps or bungees was that someone could remove them and walk away with the luggage.
This trunk can be locked with any padlock. I use a combination lock.
While on the road if we make a stop I am less concerned about the trunk and its contents.
At my destination I can reach in and undo the wing nuts and take the trunk with me. However, the simpler solution is to pack one or more containers in the trunk and just remove them from the trunk when going to our room. The inner container can be a suitcase, a duffel bag, a plastic bag, etc.

And here's mine. I also have a waterproof case, but not vintage, of course.
