MG TD TF 1500 - Let’s make vintage cars visible – one day a year

In many countries, enthusiasts have noticed – and often regret – that prices for classic cars have been falling. Interest seems to be shifting, and younger people are not always getting exposed to vintage cars in everyday life.

I'm working on an idea that I recently brought to the president of the oldest motor club in Germany, and he agreed to take it forward together with other clubs and automotive associations.

The core idea is simple: make vintage cars more visible in daily life – and by doing so, make them more attractive to own, preserve, and enjoy.

We want to introduce a “Day of Vintage Cars”. It would take place in summer during the holiday season, when media outlets often look for lighter stories. On that day, every owner is encouraged to drive their vintage car in normal daily situations – commuting, shopping, running errands.

The goal is to spark conversations with people who normally have little contact with vintage cars, increase public awareness, and strengthen the cultural value of historic vehicles.

If the idea gains traction, it could even become an international event.

That's every day for me since I don't own a modern car. My drive to work is 80 miles round trip, usually done in my MGB GT. My classics are out on the road pretty much every day, in shopping centers, at restaurants, etc.

I hope your idea is a success! More people need to drive classic cars daily, or at least semi-daily. There are a few other classic car drive ideas out there, a couple of them being:

Thanks for the link — Australia’s National Motoring Heritage Day is another great example of how effective these visibility initiatives can be.

The Australian approach is very similar in spirit: one dedicated day where owners are encouraged to bring their historic vehicles out into public view, creating awareness and sparking conversations with people who rarely see vintage cars.

With the UK’s British Car Week, Australia’s NMHD, and now the early discussions in Germany, it’s interesting to see that the same idea emerges independently in different countries.

That tells me the concept has real potential — maybe even enough to grow into a coordinated international event in the future.

One question remains open: did these heritage days have a measurable impact?
In reality, none of the existing initiatives (British Car Week, NMHD, etc.) were ever accompanied by structured before/after surveys or market studies.
They clearly create visibility and conversations, but there is no quantified data.

Even without formal surveys or market data, the fact that these events have been running for 20–30 years is already a measurable success.
Initiatives don’t survive for decades unless they create real value for the community.
So longevity itself is the indicator — even if nobody ever tracked numbers.

And that’s fine — these events are cultural initiatives, not commercial campaigns. Their value is in public awareness, not in hard numbers.

In France we have also a national day for vintage vehicles. Promoted by the club federation. Rallye, demonstrations...

We also have Villages that displays "vintage vehicle friendly" but I don't really know what it is.
