MG TD TF 1500 - License Plate Light

So, any idea where the ground goes? I can't get it under the screw head on the left. It turns but is captive.

Thanks

i believe you are showing the ground wire in the harness.
I should have a bullet on it and there should be a bullet socket connected to the lamp shell for ground.

There are several versions so yours may differ a bit.

Stuart,

It looks like it is the center left of the lamp.

The Red wire is going to the center left round fitting. There are no other fittings. I wonder if it is some aftermarket item. I can't find any area where one would have broken off. I think I'll put a ring terminal and some heat shrink tubing on it and attach it to the nut on the back side of the fixture.

Thanks

If it is a ground get a ring terminal. If it has a plastic insulator remove it. Sweat solder the ring onto the wire A ground will not require any insulator or heat shrink unless it were to come in contact with a hot wire.

The original TF License Plate Lamp had only one(1) light bulb.
I suspect TDs were the same set up.

I have known of several cases relating to both TFs and MGAs where the earth wire and the red wire were placed in the incorrect place with the result (in seconds) of their new rear wiring harness area being burnt out !

That's what I am going to do. I am only going to put the shrink tubing on it as it will be attached to the back of the fixture and exposed to the elements. Give it a finished look as well.

Under that screw head in there out of the weather would be good--Can you make the captive screw, uncaptive (nice word) so that you can get your newly fitted wiring eye under the head of it inside there

Couldn't get the screw out without screwing up something so I went with the ring terminal under the nut on the back.

Also put some heat shrink tubing on the red wire to prevent chaffing where it goes through the small hole as there is no grommet. I also ran the tubing on the black wire pretty far down as there was a small crack/chafe on it as well.

And the bulbs are a bit brighter as well! Bonus!

There is usually a piece of rubber tubing around the wires, stuffed down into the metal tube that branches from the spare tire carrier.
Its supposed to keep water from running down the tube and rusting it out from the inside.
I see your lamp has no provision for it.
I would however suggest, that you seal the wire up, where it goes into the supply tube with something like Duct Putty, to prevent water dripping down the tube.

Just a suggestion.
