MG TD TF 1500 - Lift-The-Dot Wood Screw Stud

The location of this lift-The-Dot (LTD) stud on the outer TF cowl (photo) goes into wood (the scuttle side rail) that's under the cowl, so it requires a LTD stud with a wood screw fastener. To mount it, it will go through the metal skin, then about 3/16" air space, before intersecting the wood, which means it will not attach to a lot of wood, and will be a very weak connection. The longest LTD stud I've seen that's available has a 1/2" wood screw.

Has anyone seen a LTD stud with a longer wood screw (maybe 1")? Or should I countersink the wood and install a nut/bolt type of LTD stud?

thanks,
Tyler
PS: Thanks To PJ for the photo.

Tyler,

A couple of comments:-

First, assigning a fixed location for the stud is unwise. A new tonneau, such as I recently got from Robbins, comes with the material unpierced, and with a kit so you can attach your own and place as necessary. If you don't already have your tonneau, I suggest you hold off placing your studs 'till you have the tonneau.

If you do indeed have a tonneau, here's a web-site of an enormous selection of fasteners, including Lift-The-Dot http://www.sailrite.com/Snap-Fasteners#!Snap-Fasteners.

You will see s selection of studs including what you are looking for, ie: a threaded screw with nut.

If you are stuck, I can send you either a self-tapper, or a screw-type with nut. Just net me know.

I purchased two, 100 piece, bags or wood screw type studs from the manufacturer, Scoville I believe.
The short one has a screw 3/8 long and the longer one is about 5/8" long.

If you do have a 3/16" airgap between the metal skin and the wood, I would suggest that you consider a short wood screw type stud and a "Tinnerman" type nut.

I had to do this with a snap on my TD, just behind the door. I held the nut with a bit of super glue on my finger. After a bit it worked fine.

I have plenty of the wood screw and machine screw studs if you need any.

You can also get LTD studs with a 10-32 machine screw that can be installed with a washer and nut. Cheers - Dave

You can also anticipate this need and place a small metal plate behind this area pre assembly (Vette Panel Adhesive is the nuts for stuff like this). Later, drill and tap a hole wherever you need to with confidence.

I just built a fiberglass hot rod. I put in loads of them in spots where I didn't want to or couldn't fiddle around with a loose nut.

Hmmm, I assumed the stud location in the photo was the standard location on the outside of the cowl. But I can wait before installing it, just wanted to get all cowl LTD studs (and rear view mirror) installed before installing the windscreen. All holes had to be located and drilled again.

Does anyone else have photos of their LTD studs on the outside of the cowl?

thanks,
Tyler

Years ago I put a plastic wall plug into the hole and used one of the screw type studs . It has worked great for years. See the article that I sent to Jeff at LBC.

The following link will give you information about placing these studs AFTER you receive your tonneau. If you do not already have the holes in the body, like I did.
