MG TD TF 1500 - Lock Washers - small O.D.
Will you tell me about the lock washers on my TF-1500 that have a smaller outside diameter than "normal" lock washers to which I am accustomed. Are the smaller washers original to the car? The lock washer on the left in the picture below is under the nuts that attach the rear Armstrong shocks to the frame and also under the bolt heads that attach the check straps and rear rebound rubbers to the frame. I have found them in other locations, too. The outside diameter of the "small" 5/16-W lock washers is 0.582 inches. The outside diameter of 3/8" SAE grade 8 lock washers that I bought at Ace is 0.671 inches. It's a minor thing, but I'll never learn if I don't ask. Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 Dimensions: ![]() |

Yes. These smaller diameter washers are original. Don't know of a source. |

I can buy High Collar lock washers locally from Fastenal. http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/fasteners/washers/lock-washers/_/Navigation?term=&termca=&termpx=&sortby=webrank&sortdir=descending&searchmode=productSearch&filterByVendingMachine=&r=~categoryl1:"600000 Fasteners"~ ~categoryl2:"600089 Washers"~ ~categoryl3:"600101 Lock Washers"~ ~sattr01:^"Imperial (Inch)"$~ ~sattr02:^3/8"$~ ~sattr08:^"High Collar"$~ EDIT - the link doesn't work Lonnie TF7211 |

I believe that the smaller diameter lock washers often found on our cars are different from high collar washers: although similar shape, high-collar washers are considerably thicker. If you are striving for pure originality, they are not, and I do not know of a source. I use metric lock washers, which are at least close in size. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

I believe that I found "small O.D." washers at British Tool & Fastener. No specs given on-line. STEEL WASHERS FOR BSF, BSW, BSC SIZES UK 5/16" (out of stock) http://www.britishfasteners.com/index.php/products/washer-qty-10-spring-single-uk-516-6085 STEEL WASHERS FOR BSF, BSW, BSC SIZES UK 3/8" http://www.britishfasteners.com/index.php/products/washer-qty-10-spring-single-uk-38-6090 Lonnie TF7211 |

It's hard to tell whether these listed are thinner than most; they look pretty much the same! Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Rather than guess by looking at a pic. I phoned British Tool. They measured a 3/8 UK lock washer #6090 (fits a 5/16-W bolt). It is exactly the same I.D., O.D., and thickness as the one on the left side of the diagram in my original post. Wish Chris hadn't told me that the smaller outside diameter lock washers were original to the car. Now it will rub my picky gene the wrong way if I replace one with a standard SAE lock washer. (It's a curse.) I'll order an assortment from British Tool today. Lonnie TF7211 |
