MG TD TF 1500 - Looking for TD brake drums

(for steel disk wheels, not wire wheels)

A couple of my drums are very worn. Since lots of people change over to wire wheels I'm hoping there should be some good old stock drums around (even worn, but not worn out).

If you have some you no longer need, please let me know.

Thanks

Mark,
If you have front drums, keep one to use as a jig for balancing disk wheels on a spin balancing machine.
First remove the bearings, and balance the drum by itself.
The balancing machine "cones" fit nicely into the surfaces where the bearings were.
Then mount each wheel/tire assembly to the drum for a LUG CENTRIC balance..
It worked quite nicely for my tires/wheels.

The stock drum measures 9" - take them to a brake shop and see where they are. You can take .100" off, and still be fine, although you will probably need to shim the adjusters.

TD/F drums hardly ever wear out of spec.

Has anyone put thought into having disc wheel drums metal sprayed and then turned to spec

I met a guy at a car swap meet, about a year ago, who restores brake drums. Machines them out and puts a new sleeve into them. The work looked really good. I suspect there are others, too. Sorry, I lost his contact info, but if you do a search on something like "brake drum restoration" you probably can find someone who does something similar.

One of my brakedrums is in an unsatisfied condition. A piece has been broken out many years before. I guess it is a little bit out of balance. Or can this be ignored? The pre owner didn't worry about this fact.
Bela

I imagine the missing piece is from the reinforcing rim around the outside. Some previous owner probably tried to remove the drum with a hammer! One of mine was like that and I considered it potentially unsafe and scrapped it (TF with wires so easier to find a replacement).

Yes Dave you are right. I have to look for a substitute. Is anyone able to offer such a brake drum?
Is it possible to switch to the brake drums which are in one piece?

Bela

I have a pair of TD rear drums for steel wheels, though they don't look the same as in your photo. No damage but some pitting, though I doubt its of any consequence.

Hello Dave,

yet I'm looking for the front break drums. Until now I have not inspected the rear break drums. I have made a memo - thanks.
Bela

Might be worth putting a Wanted Ad on TTT2.

Bela, I have steel wheel drums from a WW conversion. You can get in touch via fritsch_michael at gmx.de

Thanks Mike

your offer is in my memo too. Do you have front and rear? At the moment I want to keep the car with parts that match the original as long as possible.
Bela

I had to replace one rear drum on my 53 TD because the splines were worn(or poorly made) about .030" wider than the splines on the axel. This caused an annoying clunk every time I backed up. I couldn't tighten the nut enough to lock it in place. I shimmed it temporarily, which worked, but then bought a used drum on e-bay which solved the problem. I was skeptical about the condition when I bought it but it turned out fine.
Good Luck Chuck!

I just acquired 8 TD brake drums after completing a 1,600 kilometer 4 day round trip & a couple of them have a piece missing from the reinforcing rim, as Bella & Dave describe above. See pic below. Couple of questions. Does the missing piece affect the balance? (I suspect it does.) Can this rim be repaired by welding up the missing piece? I understand the process of welding cast iron, the key element of a successful weld being preheating the item to a cherry red prior to welding.

I also have two types of the Mowog drums. One type is of the one piece construction, the other has a removable central section, however the bolts are missing. Can the missing bolts from the second type be purchased in BSF thread or are they UNF, if they are available at all? Is the two piece drum the later type & if so I assume the bolt threads are UNF?

All of the drums show no signs of scoring on the lining face however I'm yet to measure them with the digital vernier. Would having them media blasted while protecting the lining face be the best way to remove the surface rust or would some other method such as a rotary wire brush do the job equally as well (for a lot less money?)

Cheers

A) The two piece drum precedes the one-piece drum
B) The chunk missing from yours is usually from using a rim-puller - don't.
C) It's difficult to weld the drums; they have to be heated so hot that they distort badly. Have the wheels balanced on the car, and it's no issue.
D) I clean mine with a wire wheel; the drum area I go over with a Scotchbrite pad, and sandpaper if necessary. 9" diameter is stock, but you have to look long and hard to find one that's much oversize.
E) I suspect the earlier drums use BSF fasteners, but can't guarantee it. They stopped being used in 1950.

Thanks Tom. I'll avoid welding them. Surprised to learn that the 2 piece precedes the one piece version. Pretty sure the BSF threads were earlier than the UNF which were introduced because of the American market. I have BSF on the rear & UNF on the front as they were a later replacement by one of the PO's. Anyone know if the bolts are available? Cheers

TD12285(Dec 10 1951) The Wheel Studs and nuts and all threaded fittings in the driveshaft and rear axle were changed from British Standard Fine (BSF) to Unified (UNF or SAE) threads.
TD12419 (Dec. 13 1951)Studs and nuts securing the spare wheel to its carrier were changed from BSF to UNF threads.

There is a chap on the German MGDC website offering a pair of TD rear drums.

I'd have to get you to translate Declan. It seems Anglo Spares have the bolts or studs that I require. While browsing I noticed that there appears to be a difference between the front & rear drums. So it seems they are not interchangeable. Anyone explain why? This will help me identify the drums I've purchased.

Peter - they are entirely different. Fronts have a large area to accommodate the wheel bearings, the rears just have splines for the axle shafts.

Thanks Tom. It seems they are all for the front. Cheers

Dave Hill. In your reply you mentioned TTT2 as a place for parts wanted. I have Both front fenders and one rear that I would like to sell .Do you have the correct web page so that I can check if anyone is in need. Thanks Bill

What is a set of front drums worth. They are the old two piece drum that did not use a bearing cap? They are in good condition.
