MG TD TF 1500 - Loose wheels

I recently finished the restoration on the TF. I noticed a bad vibration under acceleration, and thought it was the exhaust hitting something. I found the rims are loose on the hubs. I have tightened the Knock Offs as tight as they will go, and they are still loose. I can rock the rim back and forth about 1/4" and tip it for and aft about 1/8." the splines do not look worn, and I did not have this problem before I took the car apart.
Any ideas?

Dave,
Check there is nothing hanging up the wheel moving in onto the beveled cone that matches the identicle part in the rim. (shown as green and brown in the attached)

The green part of the wheel rim has to mates to the cone on the hub and the knock-on centers it and hold it tight against the hub.

Check that nothing else is fouling the rim.

I.E. The nut and studs that hold the brake brum to the hub.

Just a thought...

Just throwing this out there.... Dave, have you tried a different knock off spinner to see if you have the same problem?

On all 4 wheels David or just the rear two?

Put a bit of grease on the inner bevel of the spinner and try again. If still loose, check to see if the inner wheel hub is making contact with the brake drum nuts. If so, you have probably overtightened the spinner and distorted the wheel hub. There is no fix for this. The wheel must be replaced. It is a dangerous situation and should not be driven on until remedied since the wheels can easily come loose and fly off of the car at speed.

Solved! you guys are good! I repainted the wheels and it has new knock offs. I noticed the paint on the rim where the knock off rubs on was chaffed up. I greased the lip in the knock offs, and problem solved. Who would believe the knock offs would get "stuck" on the rim and not screw down all the way without grease?

Most people don't know that there are two tapers on a wire wheel. The obvious one on the back, and the one inside the spinner. This is the one that centers the wheel over the hub, and while the rear taper is a friction surface and therefore runs dry, the spinner taper is not!

Wire Wheel related - I drove my just completed TF for the first time to the Gof in VT and was rewarded with a first. On the way from Nj to VT I had a flat, but the tire still had 12 lbs. but over a dozen spokes were broken!! It was leaking from a nipple on the tire, but the spokes were on the hub - unrelated I think. It is a new Dayton Wire Wheel with stainless steel spokes. They have no idea this happened with only 400 miles on an unabused wheel and new splines and everything. But Dayton was nice and even apologized and have it now and will report to me on it and fix. I had them rebuild my original painted ones in 1978 and drove thru 2006 with not so much as a tuning over 40,000 miles.
